I actually just used a preset I got for Lightroom that gives a similair look to HDR. When I took this I didn't have proper software or experience to do it.

Thanks Agniva. I did overexpose the photo slightly when shooting, but then in Lightroom I raised exposure quite a bit to get it where I wanted. The loss of detail on the face was entirely intentional, but I didn't use any of the blurring or dodging tools to do that, it was just the exposure. There was a certain photo I was thinking of that had a similair effect. I think it was Richard Avedon, but I can't find it. It's of a women with a black hat on, and it's overexposed so that all you can see is her eyes, mouth, and vague shape of the nose. I wasn't trying to imitate that one, but that's just what gave me the idea to do a hi key shot.

Yes, I used a soft box. I prefer softboxes over umbrellas, I prefer the quality of light, plus you get a bit of control over where the light goes.

Thanks Tony. Here's one of the three shots I stuck together to get this. Not that big a difference, but I think the HDR has a bit more oomph.

Very nice shot, good job on the lighting. I know it can get tricky in the studio trying to light to people. Also like the spotlight on the background. This ladies must be very chuffed with this photo.
Cheers

Great Shot. An amazing sharpness and level of detail. I know how difficult it can be to photograph birds.

Wow, thanks all of you for your comments. Actually, looking at the photo now, I see way to many things I should have changed; cropping out the tops of the seats in the bottom of the photo, standing slightly to the left... ah well, nothing I can change now.

Out of interest, and slight narcissism on my part, this photot was used bu sasol for a short article on the Sevens the other day. It's my first photo thats been used for anything of the sort, so I am quite proud.

A very nice shot. Having the subject off centre and all this open space to the right side works well for the photo. It could have not turned out so well, but because of her leaning, it balances the photo out. You've done a good job of using DOF to prevent the grass from becoming too dristracting. However, I do think the single blad of grass ( or whatve it is) in front of her face is a bit dristracting. But it's not a train-smash.

I like what you say Lara. Almost everything that you can do with Digital Editing is stuff that has always been done with normal film and darkroom work. The only difference is that now it is a lot easier and quicker to do.

An interesting photo. Just one thing, to my mind it seems to me as if the containers are slightly skew. Perhaps just straighten the phot a bit.

Crop the top off a bit. It puts more focus on the action. And perhaps slightly more on the left, giving the firl in the background some space to shout into.
Otherwise a nice action shot.

A nice photo. Atmospheric, and it tells a story. But, in my opinion, You could have cropped a bit from the top and bottom, or either of them. Perhaps you could also have photoshopped those buoldings out the background

hey Olga. Haven;t been active for a while, but I'm back... although I admit it is mostly to waste time wehn i should be studying.
This photo is stunning. Not much to say that hasn't already been said. The lighting is fantastic, but i especially like the way it's lit the face just enough to see the models expression.

Not bad. Perhaps cropped slightly differently: Cut out the empty space above the head, and maybe a little bit to the right as well. If you can, you could also have left a bit of space to the left to give him some space to look into.

I like this one. The strong black and white tones work well. Reminds me a bit of Henri-Cartier Bresson.
Only thing I don't like is the Cable stretching across the picture. It shouldn't be too difficult to photoshop out.
Cheers

Thx Stef. I do have a bit of a thing for sports photography. This was actually form one of my first 'jobs'. SWD Cricket want me to take photos of all their matches this season. Still waiting for payment, though...
And I do agree with you about the face. I did walk round to the otherside of the field, but then the players were a bit silhouetted against the light and i struggled to get the right exposure. but next time, I'll be their for the whole match, so I have some more time to try some new things (I only managed to catch 2 or 3 hours of this match before it ended).
