About This is Salt Water Springs about 30(ish) miles south of Furnace Creek in Death Valley. It is the only home on the planet for the endangered Pupfish. A tiny species of fish barely visible to the eye about one inch in length (if that). This salt water sanctuary is here all year around and it's source is an underground spring. It is a very fragile eco system so the boardwalk was built to protect the waterway from as much human intervention as possible to protect this rare and endangered fish. Who would have thought the hottest place on earth could be home to such a rare and delicate fish of all things. Isn't nature fascinating! :)

Thanks to all who may drop by to view and comment on my images.

Cheers - Ann :)

I never saw the stream when I was there - though it was a fleeting visit with it being over 130 degrees that day. openig the window on the car was like having a bucket of hot water thrown over you!!! so hot..

you;'ve got the huge dunes and mountains in the shot wel here - takes me back to all those inclines from Yosemite to Vegas - via here of course.

Got a few photos from Death Valley junction somehwere! not digital though!

Sorry Ina. I didn't get any pupfish macros. I don't do macro (yet) :) They are almost impossible to see with the naked eye so I didn't see any that day but I was assured by the rangers that they are there.

I haven't had time to post images Ina as I've been really busy. Also I have to start weaning off UF cause we are preparing to get on the road again. We have another month or 2 here but have lots to do in that time. I don't want to go cold turkey in UF so I'm posting here and there but less and less. When we get on the road again the only internet I will have will be wireless Hot Spots and they will be intermittent every few days if I'm lucky for short periods of time and all I will have time for is to download and send emails. I then do my reply emails offline and send them all the next time I'm online.

I won't just disappear from UF without a word though. I will post a "Farewell But Not Goodbye" image to let everyone know that I won't be around until we get settled somewhere again and we have stable internet again. I'm hoping to collect some email addresses to keep in touch with people who have become good friends so please drop me an email so we can keep in touch if you wish while I travel. My email is in my bio.

Cheers for now - Ann :)

A marvelous image, Ann...I saw a documentary about pupfish, and it was fascinating. I hope someday to be able to see this place in person, but meanwhile, this is a great preview. *smile* Thanks for sharing!

This is a beautiful scene. You would not expect to see that in death valley. Thank you for sharing the story that goes with the photo. If you look at my photos you will see I try to film things which are not just pretty but interesting subjects. You found both beauty and intersting facts in this photo. I wonder if the water is really that blue or if you increased the saturation a bit to add to the natural beauty. Either way it is very pretty and an excellent photo. Del.

Like Ina, I must have been kissing QWERTY when you posted this! :))

I love the varying brown/coffee/cream tones here. Spectacular blues too. I can only imagine how utterly wonderful it would have been to walk along the path there... the strange collision between the vast, rugged, natural terrain and the neat, orderly, man-made boardwalk. Both of which sustain this fragile eco-system.

Even more strange to find any kind of 'sanctuary' in a place called Death Valley!

Fantastic post Ann :)
Cheers
Rina

WOW Ann..! The composition is so rich in colour and chockerblock full of details. Well done to you sweetie. The storyline is great on this as well, very interesting facts. Why is it that so many of the World's endangered species find the most awkward of locations to go for their chances of survival. Well shot sweet Ann, best wishes to you....a big hug from Ray

Truly interesting this place, in a so wild nature to find a river with limpid waters therefore is absolutely strange. The photo is much beautiful and the colors saturate are much pleasant, appeal to also the second photo to me, beautifulst also this.

Hey Ann! When didyou post this DV picture? I must have been asleep at the wheel (er, keyboard) today! Wow, that's one area I haven't seen, gorgeous landscape and yes, the colors are like that, I can testify with my own pictures! So no pupfish omlette, eh? Sorry, I had to say that.I know it's an endangered species from the National Park literature. Even flowers in DV are an endangered species. You know this story? I wanted to take a picture of a black rock, and it had a daisy stuck in it by someone. I thought I'd remove it because it looked odd in the picture. So I take it and throw it to the ground. Seconds later, this dialogue "No officer, I didn't pull that flower from the ground, I know, it was put there by somebody else...blah-blah-blah" - I almost got fined :)
Love the water and winding boardwalk leading the eye to the arrid hills and the 2/3 composition! Cheers, Ina

Dear Ann, I like desert images and I agree with you that nature IS fascinating! The boardwalk is winding so beautifully and the colours of the dsert are very attractive, mostly earth colours. All sorts of shapes call for attention and the eye is moving all around the photo. A good capture!
Thanks for visiting my site so very often and leaving such interesting comments which I like to read. Some give me a diffferent way of looking at my own shots.
Best regards,
Gabriela

Wonderful view of the springs, Ann, with beautiful contrasting colors. Glad you included the story - nature IS fascinating! Hopefully the efforts will help save the Pupfish. I do get a kick out of the name 'Furnace Creek' :) How appropriate!

Hi Ann,
My, my, you do get around! Another beautiful image. I agree with Kathy, the med view looks somewhat soft and the large is crystal clear. I wonder what the deal is with that? Great lines and colors and a wonderful story to boot. Nice job!

Ann Nida Ann Nida   {K:45248} 1/26/2006
Hi Kathy,

Thanks for dropping by.

I hadn't noticed about the softness but I know that some are complaining about having their images oversharpened on the upload. There is an option on the upload page to choose an amount of sharpening (or you can choose none). I always choose none as I prefer to do my own sharpening if any.

Thanks for taking the time to view and comment on my image Kathy. You are about due to upload a new photo. I look forward to your next photo.

Cheers - Ann :)

Nice line and great colors here, Ann! Also a very interesting about. I agree...nature is fascinating!
Is anyone but me noticing that many of the images look very soft in the medium size, but when opened up in large they are totally focused and sharp? This is one of those! I didn't notice that happening before...maybe it's just me!
Anyway...nice image!
Kathy

hugo - oops...I forgot to attach the image. :)

Ann Nida Ann Nida   {K:45248} 1/25/2006
OK Hugo you got me!! I'll admit it. I did bump the contrast but only just a tad. Death Valley really does have colour all over it but the distances are so vast you need to post fix a tad to eliminate distance haze. For a desert it even has quite lot of water to be found....if you know where to look for it. Please see attachment on this thread of another image from the same day straight out of the camera.

OK so maybe you need a travel secretary. My forte. :) HK is first then Tehran then over to Seattle to rent a boat and shoot the city and then DV. That's quite a schedule but "WE" can do it. :) I will cancel your personal appointments for the rest of the month. :)

Cheers - Ann :)

Hi Ann, what a geat teaser for my trip to DV.... (right after HK, and I expect to be shooting from that boat real soon, too, but first, a stopover in Tehran to grab a few more snaps in that part of the world, busy, busy, busy)

From the images I've seen from DV, those amazing colours can only be real, although I would say they look a tad unnatural, untill I've actually seen through my own lense. Good composition, too, using the path to guide the eye meandering through the scenery. Beautiful!

Cheers,

Hugo
