That's an interesting thought Steve and one I didn't consider. It was very difficult to get a clear shot of this falls because of the surrounding trees and if I cropped out the yellow fall coloured tree it would make it very long and narrow in size I think. I will give it a try on my computer and see how I like it though. I'm always willing to try on something new for size. :)
Thanks for dropping by and for your suggestion and comment.
Cheers - Ann :)

It's a beautiful photo, Ann. My only comment about how you might look at it differently is that, in my mind, there are two photos here, side by side: one of the falls and one of the tree. They parallel each other in verticality, but I don't think that either one particularly enhances the other. Maybe it's that the texture of the tree nad the texture of the falls is so different. Perhaps you could crop the photo to the right of the vertical midline and let it be about a waterfall alone. The movement of the water has the wonderful feel of a diaphanous silk scarf draped over the landscape. It's a beautiful capture. Best regards, Steve

Hiya sweetie....today's critique has come from a long time ago but at least it has you on the front page where you belong. I'm at work (4.20am our time) and the internet programme on my Mac is rubbish. I can't see the comments and I can't get the large size shots on screen. I commented on this one, 'cos I can see my name listed but I haven't a clue what I wrote. Love your new post but I will comment on it when I get home and see it full size in all it's majesty. Have a big hug from me to be going on with and I'll 'see' you later today (tomorrow for you) Have a peaceful sleep..Best wishes to you sweet Ann....Ray

Thanks Gayle for your encouraging words of support. It's taken me a lot of practice but I'm finally getting a handle on these waterfalls. I enjoy the challenge.
Poor old keyboard is going to have to get put away until I can catch up with comments again. I like to play old classic rock like Stairway to Heaven, Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Whiter Shade of Pale and other similar classics along with some Beatles, Cat Stevens songs and I compose a few of my own tunes just for fun. Just another hobby when I get time for it.
Thanks for dropping by. I'll catch up with your new posts as time allows.
Cheers - Ann :)

Hi Ina,
Thanks for dropping by and for your great comments. I hadn't posted any new photos cause I was indulging in another neglected hobby, that being playing the keyboard, so I was taking a break from Usefilm then today I received an email from someone congratulating me for being on the front page. I figured OK, great, seeing as I'm on the front page for a waterfall shot I guess I'll post another waterfall shot so now I have a ton of comments to catch up on as well as my replies. Looks like my poor old keyboard will be taking a sabatical until I catch up again.
Thanks again Ina for all your support and encouragement. I will get to your new posts as time allows.
Cheers - Ann :)

Wonderful image Ann. The exposure looks good to me. I agree with Gary Dyck that taking two exposures and sandwiching them would be a good way to go if you have a problem situation in the future. I also agree with Bill Morgenstern that using a polarizing filter usually does wonders for shots like this because it takes the glare, and usually cyan cast from the reflected sky, off the wet foliage. Keep up the good work. You have a great eye for waterfall and fog shots.

Thank you for your very kind and flattering words. As a matter of fact I have visited South Africa twice (some years ago) and I loved it both times. I would love to go back again and visit some day. I spent most of my time around Durban and up into the southern part of Mozambique at the time.

Beautiful photograph Ann. Is such case a -4 stop filter could turn out very helpful: you can put the camera on a tripod and use a longer exposure, this generally enhance the fall pretty much :-)

Hi Bill, Thanks for the suggestion. I do use a circular polarising filter on all my outdoor shots but maybe sometimes I don't have it lined up correctly. Think I'll go visit the camera store today and look at more toys (filters et al)
As a matter of fact I spent a year in BC in the late 90's and I just returned from a road trip through BC and the Yukon to Alaska (up the Alcan and back - ugh) and Canada in my opinion has got to be one of THE most beautiful countries I've ever visited. I LOVE Canada. I'm waiting for a Canadian to adopt me so I can live there permanently. :)
Thank you for taking the time to view my images and for your comments. Cheers - Ann :)

Ann, this is a nice shot with good composition and the right blur on the waterfall. I'd suggest that you try a polarizing filter to increase saturation along the top rigth edge of the falls and remove the speculare highlights from the wet area. It wiil still look wet but the saturation will be stronger. The leaves will also balance out better and increase in richer, saturated colour. I NEVER shoot water falls without this filter on both film and digital shots.
Thanks for looking at and commenting on my images. What looks like a shot through a water fall in my birch image is not. That one was shot from a ridge top with intentional motion during the longish exposure. If you have not, come to Canada to shoot some fine fall images.
Cheers - Bill

this is one where the Grad filter would sort the tree out - either that or take 2 shots at differnet exposures then blend them in Photoshop.
like the shiny rock in the middle - very rare sight there

Hi Ann, Thanks for your wonderful comments on my pictures. This is a very nice picture...the waterfall is perfectly exposed. Just the tree is a bit blurred due to the long exposure. You could try a could of things a) a lens shade to keep the sun flares out b) try a ND Grad filter perhaps. You could also try to selectively over-sharpen the tree side perhaps.

Thank you Gabriela for your encouraging comment. perhaps I'm a bit too critical of my work but I'm always trying to improve my original photos so they need less Photoshop work. I enjoy using P/shop for some images but for nature shots such as this one I'd like to know how to capture them (in particular the misty water) to the best of my ability. It is difficult enhancing things like the tree tokeep it looking natural on a computer as colours and contrasts vary on each persons computer so what may look saturated on one person's monitor may look washed out on anothers. I do see that I'm improving with practice though and the encouragement I get in here gives me pushes me to keep going and shooting more. Thank you for your valued comments. Cheers - Ann :)

Dear Ann, why do you have such a problem with that tree???The photo is veay well done, well presented! What, do you want every leaf in sharp contour and the water falling straight???? Too much precision would spoil the atmosphere of the shot!!! This is my opinion, at least! You have wonderful texture on the rocks, the wetness above shining and the green moss down in degradee patches. And the contrast between the green-grey and the flaming yellow. Marvellous! Gabriela

Ha Ha Saw....maybe you should come over and hold that giant umbrella for me while I take the photo. :) Oh and while you're at it hold the tree still so it doesn't blow in the breeze while the shutter is open for 1 or 2 seconds. Thank you.
Thank you all for taking the time to view my image and for your kind comments and great suggestions. I will try all variations...maybe even the umbrella if Saw hold it for me. :)

Hi Ann, great result with the water! I admire people who shoot waterfalls and fog, and you do both! Very well, I must say. So I'm not able to answer that question, maybe a landscape photographer, or a book... I suppose since youhad a long exposure for the water, the tree leaves were bound to move with the wind, thus getting blurred. I think shooting the tree separately and merging the mages might be the best idea, as Gary said.

Hello Ann, I think you should load a map of your adventures so we can predict what you might be shooting next! This is a beautiful composition and can appreciate your dilemma with the bright tree. since you were using a long exposure and, I presume, a tripod, you could either use a graduated nd filter or as I have done many times, use a card to cover the tree half of the lens and gradually move it away thru out the exposure thus exposing the tree only a portion of the total scene.
