Beautiful, Mike. I agree on the transition between foreground and sky, too sharp and brazenly contrasty, though I'm not persuaded that "unnatural" is necessarily a negative. This is more an album-cover fantasy painting image than a representational photograph, and I think you've done it beautifully.

I am loving this guy and those burning edges are, to my eye, as the pros say distratcing. But then again such an effect was fairly common so gives this a circa led zep houses of the holy kind of feel. Personally I like it when we can achieve the looks of a different technology. Be interested to know how it was done and what it represents in old analogue photolithography terms.

Michael, I don't want to sound offensive in any way but I don't think the comments on this image up to now are helful in a way to improve your digital technique. This is a lovely scene but is in my opinion let down somewhat by your selection techniques in replacing the sky digitally. There is a very clear unnatural transition between foreground and background and also the clouds reflection doesn't match. It just looks quite unnatural to me. I only say this to try and help you, which is what this forum is all about. If you're using Photoshop, different techniques work well for different images. I often use the 'quickmask' feature and carefully paint the edges with a soft brush - the longer you take on this the better the result. Other times, if the sky is not too complex I will use the same technique but on featureless areas of sky. Of course, sometimes the light and colour is so different that one sky may never work with a particular foreground.
I've looked through your portfolio and you do have some very nice images - i like especially the more abstract ones. Keep up the good work.
I hope you don't take offense - I'm just trying to be more helpful
