Maarten & Al, Thank you both for your comments and observations. I agree with you Al the hair can be distracting and a white bounce camera right would have been better. I also think that a white trans high camera left would have been nice to distribute the sun in a more even pattern across her. But live and learn... we were trying to learn the effects of flash compensation in open shade that day.
There seems to be so many veiw points on shade, you either meter for the shadow side and then set your lights for that, or meter light at the face and then set the flash to equal one stop more when combined. I have not tested enough to decide which is better for me.
After doing numerous football teams last fall in open shade I will prefer to difuse the sun with something other than leaves, they simply move too much. We were lucky that no player had bad hot spot on their face, but it was close. Before I do a Wedding I will have to be better.
When you do this type of shot you need to watch for small things like the hairs near her her eyes, it is a small detail but it detracts from the shot. One thing that may have helped is using a reflector, gold or white would have helped more on this particular shot than fill flash.
