What looks like grain comes from using photo-shop software to dramatically boost the contrast. The shadow had a lot of drama in the display hall, but the original shot was very flat(so I cheated a bit).
p.s. It's actually a fossil of a pleistocene horse

A horse? I would never have guessed. Interesting that they could tell from the skeleton (a) it had been a horse and (b) of a breed that is now extinct. The shadow is very dramatic, and oddly captures the impression of a living, prancing horse, now I come to think about it... That's very well done! Since this is digital, I guess that what looks like grain is actually digital noise?
