Hello, Kim. I didn't realize you have two goldens. We do also. I agree with the comment about fill flash, as the blown-out background is distracting. Also with fill flash, you would have brought out a twinkle in the dog's eye. With more light from fill flash you may have had a little more depth of field to keep the front paws in sharp focus. My mid-level Elan II has a weak on-camera flash, a definite plus for this kind of spontaneous snap(missing from more advanced Canon models). I like the vertical format, and I would not crop much from this composition. The branches of the tree draw the viewer's eye back to the primary subject, and the unique pose adds to what would be otherwise a standard portrait.

Very original! With such strong backlighting like this, I would suggest some fill flash.

Very nice capture, Kim, but it could use some ps-work. Contrast, cropping and colorenhancement could improve this image of your beautiful dog. If you don,t have Photoshop, try the Gimp at http://www.gimp.org, a free editor with some nice features. Regards, Leo.

So he thinks he is a cat does he?? You should have a heart to heart if you really love him, rather than feed this terrible sickness by shooting portraits of him in a tree!! Perhaps some stick in the water tricks might help....if it's not too late! Picture is nice by the way, if one can look past the obvious psychological issues here. How you been by the way Kim??

Hi Kim, These dogs look perectly at ease with their surroundings, even though they are up a tree. The tree and the twigs/branches seem to distract the viewer from the prime focal point of the dog, the tree bark (unintended pun) looks quite busy and due to the texture seems to compete with the smooth coat of the dog (as a comparison only, I know the dog is not a smooth coat breed).
As a dog picture it works quite well and if it was my dog I would be well pleased because he/she looks so happy.
Well done!

Lovely dog, great idea for a portrait. I would crop a little from the top and the bottom because you don't need the dead space without the dog. The light is a bit too harsh, as you are losing the left side of your dog. Both can be corrected in your phjoto editing program. But you have a good inventive mind for your canine portraits. Well done.
