Love the image ... I can say I have been to Rhyolite, and seen the glass house, but was not able to capture it anywhere nearly as well as you did. Wonderful! Mark

I hope your friend documented the building as construction progressed, it would make an interesting documentary. I always like to see this kind of progressive shots, there are some famous ones - I think the Tour Eiffel - and you probably have a few from Toronto :) Thanks for writing, Andre! Ina

Hi Ina,
I heard that he did finish the house. I've never seen it or any pictures of it. The person that has seen it told me that you would never know that the house is made using 3000 tires as a base.

Hi Ina,
A guy I used to work with had a dream project going on. He was building a house out of car tires. It's not as crazy as it sounds at first. Apparently you fill the tires up with sand and concrete and then stack them. When the house is finished, the tires do not show up as tires on the outside or the inside of the house :) It's one way to re-cycle thousands of tires. The ironic thing is he had to buy thousands of old tires from the tire dump. He still had to pay for them, even though it was going to cost them money to incinerate them if they kept them. :)

Congratulations on both a very interesting *raw materials* image and the BiP Ina...:) Must have been a fun time for the builder getting them LOL...
The colours through the glass is wonderful, assuming helped along by exposure, for many years, to the weather... Composition makes for an interesting abstract also...:)

Thanks very much Andre! There was a lot of beer and whiskey and most likely a shortage of bricks or timber! As far as recycling, I don't think they were too concerned in those days, but it just shows you what you can do with some materials. Nowadays they've rediscovered straw bale as a building material :)

Hi AJ, and thanks for your comment! The house was a sort of local museum on the edge of Death Valley, its walls were made of bottles and mortar, and I guess it had pretty good insulation value with all that air trapped in the bottles. It was a clever way to recycle :) Best regards, Ina

Ina, this is dizzyingly lovely and artful - colours and reflections in the glass bottles mingle and play on the eye almost as if they are moving. I like the mortar detail too, its rough texture complimenting the liquidness of the glass. Those fixed zooms have huge DOF even at this relatively large f/stop.

Thanks, Keseph. Rhyolite, NV used to be a mining town - near Death Valley - and drinking was the main entertainment - empty bottles were plentiful, and free - so someone had a great recycling idea.
