About Another manual stich out of 4 photos. This time the light/color transitions from one frame to the next are rather sudden/raw especially on the mounts at the background. But the overall impression seemed OK to me.

In the mean while you might have noticed that the last few photos about Lucerne are all titled very similarly - I'm running out of titles ;-). So, this is the last one of the small break in the series of plants for posting the photos of Lucerne (for the time being ;-)).

Amen to that, Andre!

Let's hope that this "grounding of assessments" will be more often in future!

Cheers,

Nick

Hi Nick,
I do understand the way you feel about the short, unqualified comments that get written about many of the images here.

I fall into the trap myself as well sometimes.

A couple of years ago, here at Usefilm they would not feature a comment unless it contained a certain amount of text. That way, it sort of forced people to write a bit more about an image in order to be featured in the comments section. Of course that doesn't stop the long social chatting. But, still the quality of comments were much better in general because of this rule.

As I hinted before, I believe a critique should be "qualified" By that, I don't mean that you have to be an expert to critique.... only that you give your reasons for why you think an image is "excellent" "great" "terrible" or what ever.

At work, we call it "grounding an assessment."

I agree with you... Telling a person that their image is "really nice" means nothing at all if you don't tell them WHY you think it is "really nice"

Thanks a lot for the nice comment, Ace!

Oh well, the stich was not very good, as I already said to Andre. But still acceptable as an overal impression.

As about the songs, the problem is that the kind of images I post for the time being hardly supports my favorite songs, which (almost) always come from that hole with the snakes named "heavy metal" ;-)

But soon I'll be posting more metal-like photos, heheeee!

Best wishes,

Nick

The naming convention in form of a numbered sequence was indeed your idea, Annemette - oh well, perhaps not in this compact mathematic form ;-) The interesting thing now is to see if this sequence converges to something. My conjecture is that it does converge to a city at the river that contains at least one mermaid! ;-)

Best wishes,

Nick

Indeed, Andre, there is a huge amount of subjective considerations in photography and all arts in general. Perhaps one could go that far and say that any given image causes exactly as many different impressions as the number of spectators. But also perhaps if those spectators do exchange minds, some kind of enrichment of the own "perception" might be the result. That could make us aware of things we didn't see up to now.

This is why I can only find the typical "comments" like "wonderful image" or "great colors" simply "nice" but nothing more than that, since they don't really give me anything to think about. I can only deal with them as some kind of "obligatory tapping on each other schoulders" but I can hardly consider them constructive.

It seems just as if a direct exchange became less and less practiced because of some kind of "good will" to praise each other's images, but to my thinking this might be a very friendly approach but it contains implicitely the danger of stagnation. If all my images are so perfect, what should I try to improve, me great master of photography? ;-)

Let's hope that critiques and comments will start resembling more and more the practices of those Japanese car manufacturers.

Many thanks again,

Nick

What a pity I canīt take part in this meeting. That would have been a pleasure.
A mermaid swimming in deep...snow?? No way but on the other hand it might melt when I get down and start swinging my tail and high bloodpressure so I can finally enjoy a river!*LOL*
The LUcerne sequence...hm was that outcome really my idea??
The Iron Mermaid retires for a while;-)
Take care

Exactly right Nick.

This reminds me of years ago when when at our company, when we first learned about the Japanese methods of "continuous improvement" We were told back in the early 70's that the Japanese Auto manufacturers would praise and thank their customers for pointing out any problems or defects in their cars. It is only by becoming aware of the mistakes and problems that we can ultimately improve our own processes.

It sounds so simple to repeat this kind of thing now, because most manufacturers have jumped on this bandwagon for survival.

We can adopt a similar attitude in photography.... to a point. On the other hand, there are so many subjective considerations in the "art" of photography.

Oh well, Andre, better tell about the problems we find ourselves on our photos, instead of a comment that reveals the weaknesses of the capture after all... "sweet comments" ;-)

But seriously now, indeed it has to be that kind of "induced awareness" that playes a very big role in photography and all arts in general. Since my eyes and my own sight can only be limited, it is a real blessing to be able to receive any sincere and direct critiques from all of you. Unfortunately most of the time I read about "perfect shots" but I am glad that there are also many people like you out there, that really take a *close* look and really want to exchange minds.

Thank you so much for that!

Hi Nick,
I see, now that you point it out. Maybe you shouldn't be so quick to show those areas... Now that I know, my eye goes right to it :)

Something similar will happen to me when I am working on my own shots. I will spend a lot of time on an area that stands out to me as a mistake, or not quite right and my eye is just never satisfied with the fix. Yet, other people may never notice the mistake because of being focused on something else in the image.

On the other hand, some people will see something that we might have missed completely. I guess that's the way it is with photography.

Hi Andre!

Oh well, then let me help you with detection ;-) A attached the small versdion of thze photo with some markups of the regions where the stiches were not very good. On the big one at

http://www.usefilm.com/show_Panoramic.asp?id=1234792&Title=Sunny%20autumn%20day&Photographer=Nick%20Karagiaouroglou

they are even more visible.

Holidays are just great. At last I had a real good long hike on the mounts far away from "civilization's dust" ;-) I'll be posting the photos of the mounts soon.

Enjoy the holidays and have a nice time!

Stich detection :-D

Andre Denis Andre Denis   {K:66407} 12/28/2006
Hi Again Nick,
I hope you are enjoying your holidays as much as I am!!

When I was talking about consistancy, I meant the consistancy of the stiched prints. I can't detect where they are joined together. They appear as one shot.

Thanks a lot Andre! It has its problems, especially on the darker mountains at the depth, but all in al it's OK considering the overall impression.

Andre, with "consistency" do you mean consistency of the panoramich photos of this scene of Lucerne, or something else?

Wishing you all the best - health, cognition, and joy!

You did a great job stiching these together Nick! A lovely balanced panarama image of a beautiful town!
You do a very good job of keeping the images consistant. I think a lot of people will like this one for it's bright sunny atmosphere.

Have yourself a great Christmas and New Years!

Thank you very much for the nice comment and for the idea of the Lucerne sequence. See also attachment. ;-)

But seriously now, you won't find any field of human activity that exhibits as rich and non-selfrepeating a nomenclature as mathematics does. Way not monotonous but rather funny and inspiring.

The mountains over there get whiter and whiter as we step to deep winter day by day. Some day I'll go for a nice long photo-walk along the mountain necks and peak-lines.

As about the blending, thank you very much but... well dear Annemette, I messed the transitions on the darker parts of the mountains! :-( But still I hope that after only 762537 stiching experiments I will be able to get it perfect! The indestructible optimism of the mathematician, you see. :-D

BTW, there will be a mini-tiny UF-meeting from the 7th or 8th of January for about one week. The only known participants up to now are Olga and I. Heeeeeeeey out there, anybody wanting to take part?

Even more best wishes to you!

Nick

P.S.: Annemette, the greatest benefit for you to take part in this meeting would be to see if mermaids are able of swimming in... deep snow! ;-) Any chances?

P.P.S.: I promise to photographically witness the outcoming of the above mentioned experiment! ;-)

P.P.P.S.: Don't forget your neoprene diving suit! It's cold up there! ;-)

Annemette's idea:The Lucerne sequence!

Annemette Rosenborg Eriksen Annemette Rosenborg Eriksen   {K:55244} 12/24/2006
*LOL* Oh yes certainly titles can run out with similar motives. I guess the mathamatician has to enter the scene then and just name them Lucerne01, Lucerne02 and so forth;-)Not inspiring but it could be if you post enough Lucernemotives!
Iīm always amazed to see mountains with snow and big old trees full of leaves in autumncolours. Such a special blend.
Best of wishes
Annemette
