I don't know if it's the softness that bothers me as much as the eyes. They seem very much dead to me, sort of like looking at a fish in the market. Could just be me though.

I personally don't see that the slight softness is a bad thing here. I think a slightly soft focus is a very good vehicle for enhancing the expression of the model and to convey a further sense of somberness here. I Pagliacci screams out from the frame here. Wonderful work.
