Actually there has been no real manipulation. The negative was scanned using a Prime Film 1800u film scanner, and photoshop was used ONLY to do what any lab would do in making a print. Although I'm not at all AGAINST major manupulations via software, I try to avoid NEEDING it
In this particular case, the colors are as a result of relatively low light conditions. The aviary's tropic room is mostly glass like a greenhouse, but algae and tall plants (trees) have obscured a major part of it so that even direct sunlight is pretty well filtered. It's pleasant to view with the eye, but hand held shots can be a challenge. This bird happend to go to sleep where a ray of sunlight streamed in past the algae and the trees. The black is a result of the low light.

Beautiful Wes. I have taken a hundred or more flamingo shots in the past year, still don't have one I like.
Even with the slight blow out of the feathers, I like this shot a lot. How did you accomplish the jet black backgroound? Photoshop?

I've been doing alot of night photography lately. I've had many tree turn green due to parking lot lights shining on them. It's always interesting to see how things turn out. With night photography there are always suprises.
