Thanks Brigitte. It makes me sad looking at it though because Ambir (the Labbie) is getting on in age and she won't be with us much longer. Lori (the Ragdoll cat) is her best friend and will miss her terribly when Ambir leaves. Sometimes I dislike feeling so much love for my pets because it hurts so much when they have to go :-((

Thanks AJ.

Yes, handheld with elbows resting on a fence. I guess the peacock was about 3m from where I was standing.

Hi Dave
Thank you for the compliment and comments.

A bit of background on myself, before I comment on the K10D :-) Remember I photograph my cats and kittens a lot (for my website) and only use one hand to hold the camera as the other hand holds a teaser wand to attract the cat/kitten's attention. I have always shied away from a heavy camera for this specific reason. Another thing - I know squat about photography and thus depended on the settings of a nice point-and-shoot digcam.

Then I had the opportunity to shoot with a friend's Pentax *istDL and I was totally hooked! Granted, for my "studio" shots I now use a tripod and when I am lucky, I have an assistant to help with the teaser wand waving. But my "casual cat shots" and my recent zoo trip the camera was hand-held. The SR function is a blessing :-)

I have a LOT to get used to, and to learn. This being a SLR I am still finding my way with all the settings, and I spend a lot of time just practicing and playing around with the different settings.

As for the Pentax K10D - man, this is an awesome camera! Raving reviews, except for the recent low score on .jpg sharpness given by DPreview. However, I am yet to find any of these "soft" images from my K10D!! I have seen photographs coming from the K10D that makes the Canon and Nikon people sit up and look with interest. The camera is easy to handle, it's big but it is a very nice "big boy toy" to handle and work with.

When you have the opportunity, go and give it a try in the shop and see for yourself how good this camera is.

Sorry this is so long - but I think you can tell that I am really very impressed!

Regards
Linn

:-)) You made me feel honoured, thank you :-)

Jim, invest in a teaser wand. It is a short stick (usually rigid plastic) with either tinsel or feathers on the end. You should be able to get a wide variety at your local pet store.

I could never get the kitten shots that I do if it wasn't for my teaser wands. When I place the kitten where I want to photograph it, I have about 30 seconds to capture before they realise that it is a new place with loads of interesting things around them. I then let them play for about two minutes and bring out the teaser wands again. This leaves me about another minute or two with good attention span, and then it is gone. Anything after that and I get very poor shots of the kitten as it is only interested in exploring.

When photographing adult cats, you have to catch them when they are relaxed. Get down to their level, never shoot from a height. See what they do with the teaser wand (or even a clicker). Best of course is to have an assistant that can help you capture their attention, leaving you to handle the camera.

I don't have that luxury, that is why I could never use a SLR. I need to be able to handle my digcam with one hand only, and that includes handling the zoom and shutter button.

Hi Don
Not back permanently - Elisa twisted my arm to post a couple of kitten pics :-)

Even though I have extensive practice photographing my kittens, I still have hundreds that I don't consider worthy. I don't have an assistant to capture their attention, so I have to handle/shoot with one hand only, having a teaser wand the other hand :-))

Hi John
Yes, I am also confused because I also thought I lived in South Africa
My whole portfolio seems to be quite messed up - suddenly I have been DoD twice even though I have not been a donor for almost a year; my awards disappeared; my hits have been reduced; UF relocated me to another country ....
Any how ... thank you for stopping by and commenting on my pics - much apreciated.
Regards

Welcome to UseFilm! :-) There are a couple of South Africans here :-)

Al, how about a tighter crop on the left to remove the blurred timber? and maybe a little bit off the top too?

I like your lighting here ... nice gleam on the bench which is reflected onto her legs. Beautiful little doll (those eyes are awesome!) and a nice natural image.

The question that you posed in your bio ... copy and paste into this image's "about". Not everybody goes to read bio's.

Unbelievable!!!!
I had to take this to my fav folder!

Chris, magnificent "play" - outstanding result and a winner. This has made a somewhat drab (sorry) original into something out of this world.

Well done, you did extremely well here.

Hi Lee

Thank you :-) Yes, it did take me a very long time (one whole afternoon just extracting the horns!) but it is SO worth it! I am very very proud of this one. What adds to the quality of this OOB is the fact that JC entrusted me with his original image and thus I had all the wonderful pixels to work with!

If ever you want me to do one of your images, I would be honoured :-) Just let me know which one it is so that I can see if there is enough action/movement in the image.

Hi Jim :-)

OOB stands for Out of Bounds. AKA Out of Frame.

Making them is a LOT of fun and the end result is always entertaining, and very different :-))

Gorgeous dear John! These are my favourite flowers! and of course, my favourite colour. Your wife is so lucky - these blooms are going to last for weeks on end.

Beautiful shot, very soft but with great detail/focus.

OK - at first I thought it would be chrome and glass (like on a car) till I read your "about". Now I am thinking there is oil involved?? with the sky and brances reflected?

Whatever it is, it is a darn good abstract.

Simplistic, yet with such style. Soft, gentle and presented without flair so that the beauty of the image can speak for itself.

Well done Lori
