Thank you for your comments. We came upon this pride in Etosha park one morning. They had made a kill right beside the road and were all resting up after a big meal, so they were very relaxed. This was shot about 3 M from the car, very close.

Shortly after this the mantis left the feeder and flew over to the wall on my side porch. The next day I counted five males after this one female...she must have had some powerful pheromones. At least one mated with her and we have an egg case on a nearby plant, hopefully a new batch of bug eaters next year!

Thanks, Cathy, to you and all who commented. This is a ruby throated humming bird, they are emerald green on the back although it does not show it here. The males have a bright red throat so this one is a female or immature male. We have several dozen hanging around the house and if you are still you can approach to withing a few feet of the feeder without disturbing their activity. I have never been bitten by the mantises around the farm, maybe yours are different there. This bird was guarding the feeder and fighting off all the other hummers trying to eat. It did not know what to do with the mantis, maybe never had seen one!

Great photo, I have nothing to add to the commentary but I would like to know what equipment you used. I really love this one!

Thanks to you and everyone for your comments. I think the scene is properly exposed, the grass was very bright in the afternoon sun and the elephant's dusty skin was also very light. I wanted to put this big guy front and center coming straight at the observer since that is how it was at the time I took the photo. When you are close to a big elephant in the bush, he will be the center of your attention, I assure you, so I made him the center of the photo.

Nice composition. Here is a version brightened up a little in photoshop just to compare...which do you prefer?

I love this one. The viewer gets a nice sense of scale with the large expanse of water and the small figures. I like the way the color flows diagonally.

Very nice seascape, great scene and well composed. I have also use a Nikon Coolpix 8700, it is a lot of camera for the money.

Very nice how all the blues work together, offset by small but intense spots of green and red. NIce composition.

No worries, mate! My two boys have done their share of fighting but I told Philip (the older) I would not let him drive if he hurt his brother again (he is 14). The photo in my portfolio of the steps on the dune was actually taken by Philip since I did not have the energy to climb to the top. I hope they will both take up my favorite hobby in time.
Best, Phil

I simply added a new adjustment layer>levels, then moved the sliders on the input levels so that the left slider was under where the black starts and the right slider was under where the black stops, then you can adjust all three sliders to fine tune your image. This has the effect of optimizing the brightness and contrast to bring out the full range in the image. You can then add a little saturation with another hue/saturation layer if needed, this one did not.
Regards, Phil

Very pretty girl and nice composition. Did you mean for it to be a little flat? Here is a slight modification using levels in photoshop for comparison.

Now that is color! Nice composition with everything coming toward the point which seems to be a person in blue. Great abstract. This would have been a bit ordinary if not tilted as you have done in spite of the color.

They are said to have been dated in this area, I don't know the details but that is what our guide told us.
