About What appears to be a gray, dull moth turns into a colourful , almost monstrous creature from extreme close-up. Species unknown - 12mm in body length. Taken with the 105 micro Nikkor plus a 2.75X Panagor macro converter at maximum magnification (3:1) and ringflash. Cropped to square format (80% of original). Contrast and brightness adjusted in PS.

Hi Peter
You are right, one expects the head/carapax area to be covered by hairs. This almost looks like elongated scales, although some are thinner and looks like thick, bristle hairs. keep in mind it is a small moth and this is a considerable enlargement. My ID guides are not of much help except that I could establish that it is probably one of the wood borer moths of the Cossidae family.

What an enormous magnification! I always thought that these moths were covered in hairs.....but by the looks this mothhead is covered in feathers( or something simular).Any idea what the correct name is.....?
