Yes a ND Grad filter is a short way to say a Neutral Density Graduated filter and it is as you described it. If you're going to pick one up I would highly recommend looking into a rectangular filter as opposed to the screw on type. This link is for a decent article on the correct way to use them. http://members.aol.com/kevinoneil/nd.html. How this helps. You can spend anywhere from around $10 to over $100 for one of these filters.

I'm not really a photographer, in the technical sense. so I'm guessing that a NG filter is graduated from top to bottom so that the darker foreground wont be as dark and then the sky won't be so blown out. Is that correct? if so, I'll get one today and see how well it does. thanks very much for your advice.
Regards, Tim

Very nice work. The background mountain might look a little better if it were toned down a bit with a ND Grad filter. Still this comes off very well.

Tough exposure to capture correctly if not using a ND filter. The foreground is still a bit too dark for my taste, but I'm sure the memory of this view is still fresh in your mind. Very nice work on your composition.

Nice one Tim, I like the contrast in color & distance from the foregound to the reddish mountain peak in the back.
