There are some great books about PS, like Photoshop x.0 for digital photographers, by Scott Kelby. Really excellent. I'm using that one myself and reading it even is funny. Now how often do you get that in a computer-book? Buy-able via various online-book shops and no, I have no relation with the author, no benefits for me when someone buys a copy...

Gosh Clifton ... I do hope the UF members will jump at the chance to teach you! A couple of my friends have been trying to get the basics through my very blonde brain with very little success :-(( With this week's tutorials (which is literally step by step, something like monkey see monkey do)I am getting the basic idea of how it works!
I am hoping that one day I will be able to put together a "Spracklen" image :-)
Maybe you could try the online tutorials? I take mine through Eclectic Academy and it is only $20 per level. You could search on the www for more information on what they can offer you.
Keep well - and send some heat this way! We are freezing!
