About
My 3 Cicada posts today are dedicated to my fellow Marylander, the amazing Dan Lightner. Dan has inspired me with his incredible nature photos including two wonderful images of our beloved 17-year Cicadas.
This year's brood is now out and about, but not yet flying very much. Once they emerge and morph from their nymph stage, it takes a while for their wings to dry out. In the meantime, they can barely fly.
They are very docile and completely harmless. In their current state, waiting for their wings to dry, they are easy to persuade to hang around for a photo session.
I posed this one against a shiny new red car in our parking lot - I think it really shows off his lovely red eyes, don't you?
From what I can find on the Web, it looks like they don't get into NY State. But cross the Hudson, and you're likely to find them throughout New Jersey.
Let me know if you want some - I can put a few in the freezer and mail them to you afterwards. It won't make a dent in the population, beieve, me :-)
