About Was taking pics of the tide when a sailboat crossed my path. I ripped off the filters and changed my aperture so that I could get a crisp shot of the boat as it passed. BUT I find the composition uninteresting. Could be because I'm not much of a sailboat fan, or because it's just so plain.
Is there any saving this to create some interest?

Thanks for the comments, Harry. I like the longer exposures for the mist-like water as well, but with the boat I had to make a quicker exposure so that it wasn't blurry. I was lucky with 1/15 to keep it sharp as it was!
Thanks for taking a look!

I think I know what you have tried to do. But I would have tried an longer expose to get more dreamy effect on the water. But this is not bad at all so keep going.

Hi Kim: My biggest criticism is that the sailboat is centered, but in order to keep the foreground, you got what you got (you forgot your portable time machine to get there a few minutes earlier). My guess is the light may have gotten better a few minutes later, but hte boat would be gone. You might be able to goose up the saturation and contrast in PS and get around some of this. Overall, a very nice image. Alternatively, you could use PS and layer in the sky from your solitary tree image.

I believe that something caught your interest, something that you are not fully aware of, call it intuition? I find this to be a pleasing composition, especially the interesting foreground and the beautiful colors in the sky. My only suggestion is that it might have been slightly better if you caught the boat left of center of the frame, (in front of the sun?)

To me, the problem with this photograph is that it is really two photos. We have the amazing shot of the sailboat on and sunset on the horizon and we have the implied motion of the surf coming through the rocks at the bottom. My wants to be in two spots at once. I would present this as two pictures framed together. See my upload. I did this very quick just to give you an idea.

Take care,
Mike

Nice and oreginal. If I could suggest, if this photo was taken before the sun went down, it would look much better. But, it's still beautiful as it is.

And, thanks for replying me in the forum.

Yes, this has a professional look, and I like the border proposed by Vincent as well. I think the reason you find it a little static is because of the central sailboat. The side that adds the least is the right side; maybe cropping that would make it a little more dynamic. It feels a hair over-sharpened, for example the right hand skyline has a white edge above. This kind of image 'looks like a postcard'.

I think this is beautiful and VERY interesting. I think anything with
a sailboat in it is nice, and this is spectacular. Fantastic colors!
Great shot!

Kim, this is excellent as it is. Great shot of color and detail. I would not crop either side. It needs what it has. In this instance, I like the roughness of the water.

For me, the composition is interesting enough... If I would change something at all, it may be cropping part of the black rocks to make the overall appearance of the image a bit lighter. I looked at your portfolio and I think this image can definitely keep up with your othe work... In fact I like this one much better than the one with the varicolour filter. The natural colours are spectacular enough!

Thanks to everyone who commented, and to Audrey, Vince and Sunset Man for the crop/colouring ideas... the borders around it really give it a nice presentation style.
I'm moving on!

This is really interesting. The photo has immediate impact - A strong sence of time and place. For peope who would rather be sailing I'm sure it will lift their hearts. For you, its just another shot of a sailboat in a pretty seascape. Proof that we must photograph for ourselves and not for others. I get the feeling you are somewhat stuck on this image, wanting to love it and not really knowing how because it isn't coming from your heart. Poor Kim. This is a great shot. Just move on to the next thing you love.

I second everything that Vince said, but would like to add that he forgot something: Per the attached you can sell it both ways, (as a Horizontal for in the Living Room above the sofa or as a Vertical for a great Hallway piece), ... Yes/No?

It's a very nice versatile image Kim and thanks for sharing!

Nothing wrong with this at all Kim. I would perhaps crop just a bit of the sky since there is very little cloud action up above, and just a bit of the right side...a little dark and just slightly heavy in my opinion. Other than that (or even with those elements) you have a very nice image. Certainly the kind that would find mass appeal....if you ever wish to sell. I know you do not use borders, but with the all-white background here, I think using an off white does help see what you have. Nice work once again.

I think it is only uniteresting because the boat is in the middle of the frame. If it were more on left I think it would be stonger.

Hi Kim
I like the drama of this composition of the rough sea, the wondeful foreground rushing water. I think the sail boat adds to this shot.
I'm hoping you don't mind that I'm taking you at your word of finding some other point of veiw and came up with the attached, in which I took the colours out, lightened the rocks a bit and added a slight tone. This ofcourse totally wastes your velvia.
Just an idea and an excuse to play in PS.

I agree with Giulio - really couldn't say it better myself! I do like your last one and I still think it's one of your best photos and I still tip my hat to you for creating something so great without the aid of PS, but for my personal tastes, I found it a bit too fantastical. You've got fantastical here as well (I'm amazed at the filterless oranges and purples in this photo!) but for me it doesn't toe the line of too much. I also like the faster exposure here - the choppy water creates some great looking texture and the sky isn't as blown out. You still have soft water in the foreground and I like that contrast. I suppose the sailboat could be considered cliche, but so would any other boat, really. Or birds. And what else are you going to find on the ocean, a giraffe on rollerskates?! All kidding aside, the sailboat is fine. I maybe would have waited until it was a little less centered, but I know what it's like in the moment - gotta capture it now before it disappears!

Can't wait to see more of these "secret slides." :p

Thanks for the re-inforcement... I guess it's just that I don't find sailboats all that interesting so I've projected that feeling onto the image.

Stefan, I never thought about the filter effects... it's amazing what a few filters can do, eh? This shot is based in reality, the other fantasy.

giulio croce   {K:69} 2/19/2004
Personally, I find it more interesting than the filtered one in your portfolio from the same location. It's just a personal opinion, obviously, but this one remind me of the actual feelings of a chilly evening on the shore, while the previous one looks a more artificially boasted explosion of colours (even if nicely mastered)

Such perfect nature photo! It has really got it all, and I think it's very beautiful! Can't understand why you find it unintresting... I think it looks great!

With this scene, I think you have an optimal photo... Sure you can play around with framing but the fact remains that it has a lot of often-photographed subjects in it: sunset, sails, flowing water, a mountain on the horizon :-) I looks beautiful, but it may not be exciting to you because it does not go above and beyond "cliche." It is pleasant, but if pleasant is not what you are looking for maybe this isn't it? I think that Lex probably said it better :-)

It is fun to see this shot without the filters for I can appreciate the effects they had on the previous shot from this location.

Beautiful shot, Kim! I like the surf on the rocks, and the colours are very beautiful. I'd say the composition could be made a bit more intriguing by cropping the image a bit; either into a vertical/portrait format, or by removing a bit on the right side, thus placing the sailboat a more off center. I think the vertical centered line makes the photo a bit stiff..... Still, a nice shot, and I (for one) like it.

Cheers,

Hugo

I don't think you have a problem with this shot...it is colorful enough and intersting enough...it works very well..Kevin

I don't get it, it is interesting enough, the water flowing true the rocks. The sunset, it ain't a spectaculair photo, but is looks really nice. To make it perfect i would have cropped some of the right part, but that doesn't make it "more" interesting. The only thing i can think of is make the shutter time 1/4 or something, that gives an effect to the water. But i can't think of more at this picture, it looks great!!
