About Lighthouse Park, Vancouver, with the last light of the day and the waves crashing on the rocks. I like the long exposure treatment here to soften the waves and create a mist-like scene.

Almost surreal with the colours used. Amazing scene.

Amazing colors. Goes even beyond what I thought Velvia did to nature's own work. Love your work.

A superb image and very colourful. The long exposure works a treat and the wide angle is perfect.

HI Kevin!
Thanks for the enthusiastic comment on this shot. Lighthouse Park is the same as Atkinson Point... I think the lighthouse is called Point Atkinson.
I didn't realise that you are also in Vancouver... or maybe I used to know it... anyways, I would whole-heartedly agree that you should go out there for some sunsets. Of course now that the sun stays up so late it's usually behind the mountains by the time it sets. Probably August / September it will be setting again in the ocean.
Thanks again and I'm off to check out your portfolio!
Cheers

Holy crap, Kim, this absolutely rocks! And Rolls! All Night Long! ...sweet suzie. It's crazy. Vince had some good points, but I'm like you, a totally saturation-mad mofo so I like it as such. Lighthouse Park... is that Atkinson Point? I was by the lighthouse there about a month before you took this, I figure, and was looking for something one morning but got no sunrise at all... I'll have to try sunset. I did, however, get one from North Van earlier that morning (#281047) looking back at Lion's Gate which was kinda decent. A lot of your recent photos are absolutely incredible... I'm going to have to head back to Lighthouse Park soon!

The colors and how the light falls on the rocks are really wonderful. I might have just a little bit less shadow to the right.

Thanks so much Vincent, for your honest critique... I'll take it to heart! I've decided that I am a colour freak... I love the super saturated and deeply vibrant colours.. but with reading your comment I think I will also start taking the same shot again either minus filters or with the bare minimum so that I have options. Right now I love the P173 and the boost that it gives my shots, but in a few years time I might look back on these and think "what was I doing?" *grin* (although I think that I will always like this one!)
I've attached a similar shot, taken that same night with a longer shutter speed and the filter rotated more so that it's not quite so strong of a colour effect... I miss the cool patterns in the water though.

Thanks again for your honesty and for your insightful comments. Always welcomed!

same place, longer shutter, less P173

Initially I decided not to send the toned down colored version but just the B&W. But before deleting it figured I'd post it anyway. Just one persons opinion here! Keep up the good work Kim. It's a pleasure to watch you progress!!

toned down version

Hi Kim, nice to see you getting into some longer exposures. I too really like the composition here. You have brought us down into the water so to speak. I feel the layout of rocks framing the scene here is excellent. That is something that while it can be trained to a degree, is really more or less something you are born with. You either have an eye for a well laid out composition or you do not. This simply works...very nicely balanced.

That said, I will have to break away from the crowd here with regards the color and contrast. In my opinion there is just far too much going on. That filter by itself is one I have since retired just because it does not look very close to being natural. In addition here, the brightness or perhaps contrast appears to be pushed a few degrees too far. When you put the two together it gives me the impression that this is plugged into a wall socket. Portions of the sky as well as much of the moving water are simply too hot. But more than anything else the saturation is just too strong here in my honest opinion. I realize I am in the minority on this one, but wonder how much all of this great shot and praise really helps somebody especially if it encourages them to go out and do the same thing again. Your work IS very good and continues to improve. You also know that I like and use filters, just in this case here, it just seems over the top. Here is a B&W version to just illustrate how good the composition is. Try using a Cokin sunset 1 or 2. It is a graduated slight orange tint that keeps a much more natural appearance. Just my honest opinion here. Look forward to seeing more of these. Aloha.

It is the light and shade playing on the rocks which take this photo out of the "seen this before" category and make it truely special. Regards

Kim, this is absolutely stunning! Excellent choices in the filters to produce this amazing result - the mixture of cool and warm colors is a feast for the eyes (I especially like the light on the rock in the foreground!) Truly a work of art - into my favorites it goes!

Kim! You naughty person - you've been hiding this one on me! You've certainly picked the right category for this photo - I sincerely think it's one of your best. Great exposure, choice of filter and composition. Lighthouse Park has never looked so fantastical! My one minor nit: perhaps a bit of desaturation is needed. Not much, but the purple is starting to toe the line of a bit too much, though that's just my own taste. I think you've really nailed down the wall photography method - I can't see any softness at all.

I hope this photo nets you some extra acclaim - you deserve it! :)

Wow, thanks so much for the positive reinforcements.
@ Bradley: The colours are the same as the slide... I actually projected the slide on my wall and took a digital picture of it so I could upload it to Usefilm, so everything is au natural. (except for the use of the Cokin P173 blue/yellow polariser to add a little boost of colour in the sky)
Thanks again everyone...

This is AWESOME!! I would have a hard time believing that you are an amateur! I looked at your portfolio, and it looks awfully professional to me!! This shot has such beautiful colors, and movement. Did you tweak the colors in PS?? Whether you did or not, it is a wonderful landscape! ...Brad

It is a really cool composition and I am a sucker for long exposures of water so this appeals a lot to me. All you need to do now is to make a velvet print :-p
I don't know what the P173 is all about, but you put the grad filter to good use, letting the forground participate in this color show. My favorite part of the long exposure effect here are the patterns in the right-most part of the water - the kind of structure you can only see after integrating for this long.

What a beautiful shot, Kim. I love the overal tonality, especially over the sea. I like what you have done with the shutter. It really smoooths the waves and gives the pic a very mysthic feel. Great job.

Regards.
