Lot of nature photographers would die for this image and use 600mm lenses! Here you got it with the humble 18-200! Great, Tim! I like the visual dynamics as the bears "pull" in different directions.

That is excellent shot, Tim; I can see it for a magazine
Those two posture angles are truly dynamics also not typical
I think you can submit works like this one …they been looking for :):)

Hi Tim,
I actually live right in Okotoks, but spend a fair bit of time out along 549 and the connectors to it in search of "subjects"... You're right tho', the elk and deer are always present, so just a matter of trying to catch them in a cooperative mood! I was actually out to B.D. to Koop's just last week in fact...

Thanks for taking the time to comment...I see you are a fellow hwy 549er.....Living in Black Diamond I go past ur place often after fording the river. You live on a very scenic drive. I love seeing all the Elk milling around in the morning and evenings. I see you also got some shots of the fox. I gather that it now has kits, although i have not seen them as of yet.

Great capture, and well taken considdering the light and distance (?).
We hiked in this area a few days, but where not as lucky as you were.(maybe because of the "bear-bells" we carried?)

haha...yup AJ...gotta say it was a grab shot...as these guys don't hang around to be adored...lol...Wildlife shots is a photo catagory that is tough to get something different in, and i like to get a shot that conveys a story if possible mostly, or evokes some kind of a emotional response. So when shooting live animals you are pretty much on instinct as a photographer with not much time to access what you really have until later at home. The light being near sunset, was low, so i was happy to get anything. really....Thanks for taking the time to comment, and feel free to express what ever you see or feel as I don't take offense very easily. There is always room to improve and i am open to any critiques you have.

Good to hear from you again. The bear was actually quite calm even with 2 new cubs fooling around all over the place. Mostly they were trolling for grubs and it looked like Kinnickinnic berries....moving around from here to there. In fact it was hard to get them to acknowledge me at all even when i made noises to get them to raise their heads for a minute. they are well fed it looks like so they were not to scary. Plus my friend i was with is a slower runner then me so i was in the safe zone...lol...

Hi Dave,
The ISO was 320....I wanted to get the best possible quality, balancing depth of field and shutter speed and not use to high a ISO. The reality I think is that if I had shot a higher ISO then the shutter speed would have kept the blurring of their movements down to a minimum. But now in hind sight I like the images that have the blurring of the legs the best because of the action element it introduces to the photo.....so the 320 ISO worked out just fine. The advantage of shooting raw as well means i can improve the image afterwards if there are any short comings.

Best of the series for me (though I admit, I haven't put them side-by-side). But it's interesting, because I guess our natural tendancy would be to put the best one up first. I just feel that this one gives less the impression of a grab-shot. I don't mean to be harsh - but you're a damn good photographer! And it must be wonderful to get opportunities like this.
This one is fabulous - sheer quality photography.

wow, cool shot, Tim! The thumbnail makes the cinamon coloured momma look a bit like a grizzly! Was the bear snorting at you? It looks a little perturbed at something ...
I was behind a guy that was kind of close to one once and it made a bit of a charge just to let they guy know that momma didn't approve of him being so close
