Thank you very much Steve! Appreciate your comments, and 'burning' very much! That's a perfect idea. I love the crop so much, and I was in my "no way am I going to doctor my images in Photoshop" phase of photography. (What was I thinking!)

I don't think you need to change anything, Joel. It's a wonderful still life, with very calming tones. The color is great. If you decide to do any change at all, and it's really not necessary, you might consider burning in the little flap of onion skin in the bottom right. I added a rough example.

Hi Michael,
In fact, it's funny that you mention it! I have just stated using my blue LED flashlight. For the onion above, I was getting tired of the maglight's warm tone, and put tape over the lens fo the flashlight as a diffuser. I then took it one step more for this image, and grabbed the blue hi-light marker on my way back to the camera. I scribbled blue all over the tape, and it did a wonderful thing. ...a very cheap gel!
This weekend, I'll post some of my LED images.
What's interesting, as a side note. I was on location in Australia, and was demo'd a stage lights that were all LED. We're talking HUGE 10k, and 20k light pools! Very impressive! ..and, you don't need to worry about a bulb exploding, slowing down the production. I was impressed by the ability to add colors into the light by slight values. ...it's the future...
Wow... lettuce. great idea! I was going to attack a head of cabbage, but lettuce has that amazing translucent texture. *that* will be my first subject.

Thought -
Really great painted images - painted with light. Using a mag light gives that yellow warmth associated with incadecent bulbs. Have you thought of doing the same with LEDs? It should theoretically result in a cooler blue or white light. Might work well with cool toned objects like ice or ... lettuce?

Great image Joel - the lighting is great (like your approach with the maglite) giving a warm mood and accentuating the texture of the skin. I have to agree with petal on the crop - as it is, it is a bit unbalanced and too heavy on the right. Regards.

Fried over easy with a nice juicy burger please.... ehmm sorry, got carried away there for a moment... LOL!!! Tears came to my eyes... oops sorry again (couldn't resist this one... ;-D) but not because I don't like it, in fact I think it's a fabulous shot!!! Quite difficult but somehow you pulled (peeled... ohoh, sorry again) it of: a moody portrait of an onion.... great!!! Wonderful tones, details and lighting, super crop and composition... well done!!! BTW give me a call when dinner's ready will you.... ;-DDDDD!! The only little thing I might change is to crop it a bit tighter on the right side so that you'd end up with an almost square onion... shot that is...

Thank you so much for your comments Miranda! I thought the same thing. I should mention that what you're seeing is that I lit the onion with only a mag light, and for 5 seconds, I was painting with the light. Thank you very much for your honest comments..and backing my first intention that I should of gone with :)

gorgeous light. You have made something every ordinary something special. There is something a little distracting at the bottom right of the onion...the light doesn't get darker uniformly...gets a little bit brighter again...my eyes were drawn straight to it
