About With a special thanks to Mark Longo for reviving my interest in still lifes with silverware, the egg and the candy (actually hematite stones) - thanks for the inspiration Mark :)

Also, if you go over to Rina's site (http://www.usefilm.com/image/1047080.html) you can get some great rumballs and with my Coke can, you can pretend to have rum & coke :)

Thanks Steve, that's exactly what it looked to me like: a photorealist painting, probably because of the strong contours. I'd have to sell it to Coca Cola Canada only, because I chose the French side for local flavor :)

Terrific job, Ina. I think you could sell this one to the Coca Cola Company. It feels like a photorealist painting.
Best,
Steve

Thank you very much for the lovely comment dear Robert! I have a number of "props" around the house, I use them to set up still lifes, the silver platters - some are shiny, some are tarnished. The tarnished one has better colors, and little reflections. You'll see that I'm using it in more than one shot. Thanks again for your support :) Hugs, Ina

Hi Andrzej, there is some not-so-fresh honeydew, grapes, pickled peppers and a tomato further up on this site, but the rum & coke are gone, and I'm afraid Ann Nida took the egg for a late evening snack! So please help yourself to the new assortment :) LOL - Ina

Ina, yeah, yeah so if the rom still left there I may be keen about the Coke but I have no considerable use for the amethists as a snack. Well, so what else? The egg - is it fresh or boiled hard?
Great stuff making me hungry for the moment and curious for the art.
Stay cool, n.j

Thank you very much for your kind words, Elisa :) I'm forced to do this type of shots, not being brave like *others* who go out in the cold, and bring us amazing winterscapes (and swans) :^) Hugs! Ina

Thanks Rina! I hope you had a great day at the cricket - that's that funny game where people shoot strange objects in the air, and then they hug on a nice green lawn! :-)))) And then they come home for latte and rumballs.
OK, enough of this. Thanks very much for your great comment, I'll stick with still lifes for a while, because there are no crickets here in winter, and the beach... you saw it, can't do that either! So I'll be showing everybody the lovely things I have in my fridge for now, including some stuff from the kitchen drawers :)

Thanks very much Andrzej :) I'll remember to squeeze a can to do a new still life - "before and after" - great idea! Thanks :) Have a nice weekend (with snow)! Ina

Ina, fantastic still life impression with great composition and details. Great contemporary combination of potentialy crackable objects however some may not be that easy to crack - and of couse dring your coke and rum first before squeezing the can. Cheers, n.j

Ha Ha!!!! What have we got here then?!!! Oooooh... yes please, I'll just help meself to summa dat coke there ta go with me rum... ahhhh, now that's hit the spot! Just got back from a loooong day at the cricket and this is exactly what I need Ina, bless you.

I do love the mix of textures you have here and as Mark has very cleverly worked out - the 'crack' theme. You've got the light sorted out perfectly here too. Don't think the arrangement needs to be changed at all as I feel everything sits well in a nice diagonal, or rather a curve, with the top of the can meeting up with the join of the nutcracker along the outer edge of the tray. The detail and sharpness is outta this world!

Another great idea by you, my friend. Thank you so much for the mention. Fell off my chair when read it!!! :)) Here's to you... bottoms up!

Rina.

Oh, my husband is demanding I tell you that he thinks this is "just beautiful". :)

frame for this beautiful composition. Well captured and seen!

Well done dear friend!

Cheers dear Ina!

Ann, I'm laughing my head off, rolling on the floor, ROTFLMAO - I was just about to call it quits for today (actually it's "tomorrow" where I am) - and I read this one from you! I think Rina went into hiding :)))) Yeah, them candies won't do you any good, they're the hard type, they make nice beads though. I love to test my lens sharpness from time to time, I used to complain about it, but obviously it was operator error. BTW, be careful with egg, it's not boiled! I'll do some more stills, I kind of like them, and I'll think of some other objects. Have a great night, I know I'll miss these comments for sure :)

What? No chocolate? ;) Just doing a quick fly by of some images and came to a screeching halt at the snack bar here. I see we're doing the balanced diet tonight with the diet coke and a boiled egg. Even the candy is sugar free. Hard on the teeth though so I think I'll pass on those even if they do look like jelly beans. LOL :) This image is so razor sharp it looks 3D. The details and clarity are amazing Ina. Already went to Rina's for the rum balls so will wash it down with coke here. I'll save the egg for a midnight snack. Love the lighting here and wonderful composition. OK will toddle off with my egg now. Thanks for the snack and great still life Ina. Love it. :)

Cheers - Ann :)

Thanks very much Mark for your in-depth comment and suggestions, I kept in mind your still lifes as well as the various discussions on this subject from your still lifes. That one where you have a ping-pong ball actually inspired me to use the egg, although I could have used an orange or a tennis ball. But these are all hard surfaces. I also have a number of shots with the can standing up, but not with the nutcracker standing, so thank you for the idea! I will try this as soon as weather permits. Yesterday it was a milder day, some snow flakes in the balcony, and OK lighting. No sunshine though, I think that would add more warmth to it. I also did some with a pear instead of the egg, but it looked soft focussed and didn't post it. The surface the objects rest upon is the concrete floor of my balcony. I will try in the future to bring some kind of stand and put these objects more at eye level, although the bright sky might be challenging as a background.
Thanks again, and I'll post a few more as time goes by :) Always happy to hear your thoughts, Ina

Thanks very much Ace, I'm pleased how sharp this has turned out. Not all were so clear, some were better arrangements, but I picked this one mainly for that reason :) Best regards, Ina

Thanks so much for your dedication Ina! To inspire an artist of your accomplishment is to be paid the highest compliment!

As to the shot, your choice of objects is facinating and ingenious. The thematic elements are multi-leveled. The nut cracker and the notion of applying it to the stones is an interesting twist. Also, we crack eggs, yes, but to call attention to that by placing an egg with a nutcracker is another very clever twist. It definitely engaged my imagination! I like the Diet Coke as a reflective object here and also to bring some variety of shapes. Certainly the soda can gets "cracked" open too. It's an interesting and unexpected unifying concept you've chosen to join the objects thematically.

I love the little stones and the reflective high gloss aspects they bring to this work. Texturally and chromatically they are very well set off by the tray they sit in. The jet black with bright blue sky reflected highlights are lovely. The very indirect light in this shot is soft and attractive, especially with the sky light focused in the reflections. I like the use of daylight here. I think the idea of showing indirect sky light with relections that expose the sky directly via reflection has lots of potential to be used in many other ways as well.

I'm unsure if I like the surface that the arrangement rests on. At the top of the shot the texture of it seems to disappear (DOF?) and as a result the arrangement seems to float a little. That may be what you're after. As a matter of personal taste only though, I would like a little more texture in the background in order to ground the arrangement a more.

In alternate views/arrangements, it might be nice to try an arrangement that follows different height profiles as seen from a lower angle. Maybe stand up the can and arrange the nutcracker standing/leaning against the can, with the stones scattered and the egg nearby. Just an idea. It does add the challenge of background, and standing up the Coke can is going to make it look more like an ad shot for Coke. That would be distracting...

Anyway, I hope my comments aren't too long winded. And I hope you enjoyed shooting it as much as I enjoyed critiqing it! Very nice work Ina, I hope you keep doing these!

Best regards,
Mark

Thank you Karina, it's turned out very sharp, I liked the aluminum brushed sheen with the red logo, it adds an unexpected reality check, different from a traditional still life. I'm trying to combine more "unlikely objects" for still lifes and explore materials, mainly glass and metals :) Best regards, Ina

Technically really very nice. Superb sharpness. I am not a big fan of the coke cola company and what it represents though :)

Thanks Ciprian, I'm doing a number of still lifes with metals - silver, chrome, stainless, etc. The stones are hematite. The aluminum Coke can is part of the experiment, I liked the red and silver, as well as the contemporary mix and the French Canadian version :) I guess a glass object would probably fit in there as well. Will do more in the future :-) Best regards, Ina

A closer look explained the title :) that is a posh nut craker if ever I saw one.

Good arrangement, but it doesn't seem to really mix in my mind... I would have left the coke out

Regards,
Ciprian
