About What an unusual place to photograph Crater Lake is. Not only for its unique geographic and geological features, but because you're always looking down at the subject. For years I saw the images from the masses and even some talented photographers that failed to capture the amazing grandeur I thought was inherent of the place. I visited many times before I knew what I was doing with a camera and my images failed as well. The problem seemed to be the inability to show scale, perspective and depth from above (not to mention they don't make a lens wide enough to encompass the whole lake). Things I kept in mind during this trip at all times. A backpacking trip on snowshoes around the 30 mile rim in five days. I wanted a truly vast landscape capture of the park and thus far, this has been my best attempt. Canon 17-40, 3-stop hard grad.

Hi Marc,
I've previously commented on this spectactular photo, but just wanted to add. Today, when I opened up my email newsletter for National Geographic, I saw this photo and knew I had seen it somewhere before - sure enough it was in my favorites. Congratulations on the 'Special Mention' for the 2006 Banff Mountain Photography Competition.

Beautiful shot! I just came back from Washington-Oregon myself after a photoshoot, and this was one of the places that I have shot.

Great capture, you had a much better looking sky than I did! This was one of my favorite places to visit, and you captured the grandeur of this place really well. What really amazed me was the snow banks, some 20 feet deep or more in some places. You had to be careful not to get too close to the edge or you may find yourself buried very deep. To a Floridian, that seems awesome!

Congratulations on the award, very well deserved! Many compliments to you and best wishes! .......... Mike

Marc I was checking this out again on photoportfolios and I noticed something I had not seen my first viewing. The lake is tilting to the left some. I know this is the result of some of the wide angle distortion but it is pretty consistent across your image. Perhaps adjusting the image to give it a more level appearance would truly make this perfect. The tilt is easily missed initially when hit with the color and magnificent scenery at first glance. Hope the feedback helps.

Marc this is an exceptional shot. It's very Galen Rowell and extremely well executed. Looks like a great place to go snowshoeing too! I might have chosen a 2-stop grad but apart from that it's perfect.

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique the biggest issue with landscape photography is the difficulty to give the right sense of scales and distances, in other words to force a vast and breathtaking scenery in a small frame... with this perspective, angle and light i think you succeeded. it instantly caught my eye and i almost got lost in its depth... great!

A real challenge to capture the grandeur. Have you thought of stitching several shots together to create a much wider-angle coverage than is possible with a single shot? A panorama created in that way might work well... But this is already a splendid evocation of this uniquely beautiful site.

Hi Marc! I am so proud of your superb capture! In regards your story from the technical aspect now it supports my great dilemma on past decision between the 16-35mm 17-40 mm reading similar story’s some great photographers had mentioning the extra millimeter can be worth it thousands. Now I can see and understand your shooting dilemma experience from the wide-angle aspect.Truly this had easy my decision with 16mm now can’t wait to expand my location resources to this interesting Natures Landscapes with it.
Cheers to you Marc and to your effort presenting this superb image!!!

Hi Marc,

I was at Crater Lake in winter too but when I was there all I saw was a white wall of falling snow. It was a complete white out so I couldn't take any photos. You always manage to catch the sun's rays at their best. You suffer for your work but you definitely get the results so your efforts pay off. This is gorgeous. Congratulations for the SC award. Well deserved.

Cheers - Ann :)

Marc as I mentioned else where this is an incredible image. Nothing is more impressive than Crater Lake in the winter. Again nothing could make this better other than capturing more of it. Crater Lake has such vast sweeping views that no lens will do it justice. This on the other hand is the closest I've seen. Amazing lighting and truly a capture of one of natures finest moments. Congratulations on an incredible image.

WOW, SUPERB!!!!! What a fantastic pic, this is a definite 'Print and Hang' candidate!!! Gorgeous colors, fabulous view and clarity, wonderful reflection and excellent composition!!! By capturing that 'snowcap' combined with those trees, you've succeeded in getting scale and depth into the shot!!! My only problem with it is: it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too small.... LOL!!! (I want it at least A1 size... ;-D)

John, above all I believe in getting the shot right in-camera and portaying the world in its finest light.

It's not all fun and games (doing what I do) though. Sleeping in your car, trying to maintain an organized life spending much time away from home, endless file submissions, keywording, photo requests, obligations, matting and framing, various marketing efforts, ect, ect. It can be a lot to handle and do it right!

Marc,
You are living my dream. To travel the world shooting landscapes, what a life. Looking through your portfolio I am awinspired. You mention in several of your flavor texts that you use very little PS. Admiridable. All to often I see people whom try and create a good photograph instead of capture it. Your work is amazing, thank you so very much for sharing.

Jerry, I checked the original file and did notice a slight color abberition (as you mention, not uncommon even using decent glass especially when such severe contrasts are involved). However, what you are seeing here is primarily a result of sharpening after compression. The abberition on the original file is practically non-existant viewed at this size.

Hi Marc,

I agree with what has already been said. You did succeed in your oblective. Lovely shot.
I see some chromatic Aberation along the snow line in the bottom left. Not usual with the 5d & L glass. Do you think it is from compression??

Jerry

I think you succeed in solving all the problems you thougth you may encounter. The prespective looking down is great, the sense of scale is absolutely incredible. Perfect composition Marc, lovely colours, and low speed to acomplish than mirror effect in the water and a well choosen moment of the day to press the shutter button makes this image an trully especial one.
I believe that this image will transport you directly to that place again.
Thanks for sharing such a beautiful image. Too my favs without a doubt
