About Normally, I receive awesome advice here on UF for my images. In this case, a fellow (very good - female) photog has given me some great points about my image which - dare I say - I assumed I had finished. She is not on UF andI feel privleged to know her (I know I am) . . . even though she told me how much my work really failed to meet the test of quality. Taking her advice, I have added a 10% (50% opacity) dodge to highlights on the chin, 4% highlight at 50% opacity to legs and 8% burn at 65% opacity and feathered at 125 pixels to the chest.

Can this still be improved?? Comments?

Thanks to EVERYONE for helping me to improve! You can't possibly know how much I mean it!

Hi Doyle,
As you know, a lot of the old masters have been known to spend hours, days and even months trying to get an image just right. I think you have to really love photography to try and get every possible improvement out of an image. As you say, every aspect is enjoyable... and we are learning all the time. I understand exactly what you mean when you say you enjoyed every minute of creating this image. Even though some of the differences are very small. YOU know what you did to get to that point. It's a labour of love!
Andre

LoL! Andre! My buddy! I cannot agree with you MORE! One of these days - soon, I hope, I'll have a shot I myself love. I am, indeed, my own worst critic . . . have no doubt. You really made my day by pointing out that the shot, and not the technical merits of the shot, makes the composition. In truth (IMO) you need both . . . a certain feel, and good techs to present and convey that feel. There have been times working on this craft when I get to feeling this isn't fun . . . usually followed by deleting the entire image for good. But I - for the most part - have enjoyed all aspects of photography, no one part more or less than another. In this case . . . I have enjoyed every moment . . . even seeking advice and comments elsewhere . . . and it has remained fun for me. So while the thought is certainly valid . . . I have enjoyed this one . . . and appreciate the comment VERY much!!

John:
I totally appreciate the philosophy behind this comment. As you mentioned, the improvements are noticeable (not everyone agrees). But here's the thing . . . I asked. And you can rest assured that the 'fun' is not out for me, while for others it might have been. Individual preference I gather. You are Soooooooo right that the 'nit-picky' aspects can deflate the drive ("at times") and it's a great point to consider. It's something people who give serious critiques need to watch for all the time . . . help people to improve without making them feel overwhelmed.
I appreciate (very much) the comment!

Doyle I <~~~~~

I really can't tell the difference without looking at it side by side, so i went back to the previous but can't recall the difference. All I know is that This kid is framed and he has a dark background, it will be hard for the judge and jury to acquit him.... : )

Great image Doyle!
I agree with John and Andre.
I've switched back and forth about ten or fifteen times only to notice an infinitesimal difference. I do like the improvement to the chin but the rest was unnecessary in my opinion. Started as an A+ image and ended as an A+ image.
Very nice work!

Andre Denis Andre Denis   {K:66407} 4/24/2007
Hi Doyle,
You would really have to go over the two with a very fine tooth comb to come up with a difference in them. Both versions are very good.
I think John Loreaux has a point when he talks about how we sometimes take the enjoyment out of photography by constantly nit picking. And it is mostly self nit picking I'm talking about. I don't know how many times I have gone over one of my own images trying to "fix" something, until it is just not fun anymore. Sometimes I will save different versions and look at them the next day or a few days later and question why I bothered changing the original. :)
For all the technical wizardry that you have gone through on this one, I still say it's the expression on his face that makes the shot special :)
Great work for sure though Doyle!
Andre

Hmmmmm I like to think that 'everything ' can always be improved Doyle... in someway , at some point and time...and I 'DO Agree' the 'Final Ibex' is the Ultimate so far IMHO of course...but what a difference in the changes you made- It's Spooky almost..It's a 100 times better than ever and I've always thought it was wonderful ....sooooo my dear friend... . .. as much as I wish I could answer your question, I know You already know I cannot:(:(
But I really love the changes- and wonderful improvements !
Excellent 7/7

Best Regards,
Michele~

Doyle, I am unable to judge such fantastic quality. The only version that I did not like was the color version. This is very strong and I love it. Thank You.

Although I do think the improvements are noticable Doyle, I sometimes think the technical aspect of photography gets in the way of some very great photos and compositions. What I mean is, I thought the other photos of this were very good! Some people who overly scrutinize photos sometimes take the fun aspect from photography! I DO believe We should all try to improve Our work, I also believe getting nit picky can take the wind out of Our sails at times.
I like the presentation of this photo Doyle! Again, the lighting is very good as are the tones!
Super job! Take care!...............................John
