Muy bonita James, tiene una gran suavidad y sutileza en la escalera de grises que has conseguido, una gran profundidad gracias a estas nubes que ocupan todo el cielo y una bonita composición, felicidades y un saludo.

Nice feel to this one, James! It is a natural composition with the buildings lines intersecting at the third. I like the b&w tonal quality and range.

Interesting and nicely composed, James. I like the motive of repeated whites in the boat, seed heads, waves, gulls and the fact you have held them within tonal range.

Steve:

Thanks for your comments. I had dodged some of the midtones and highlights but still did not get the contrast I was looking for. I will try another version along the lines you have mentioned. One other person mentioned the horizon line on the previous version.. JRC

You have the makings of a fine photo here, James. The pattern of the ice is really interesting and there's a nice symmetry between the look of the lake and the sky.
There are three things that I would do if this were my photo, which I realize it's not. For one, I would straighten the photo to make the horizon horizontal. The second thing I would do would be to increase the contrast and brightness. As it stands, the only way I know I'm not looking at a muddy lake bed is the title. To me it doesn't look particularly cold. I think a brighter more contrasty photo would enhance the feel of the light reflections on the ice surface, and white is a pretty cold "color" when you get right down to it. The third thing I would do, and this really is a matter of personal taste, is to crop off some of the top and the bottom. I've mocked up an example of what I would do.
It certainly is a nice capture.

Nice the way the sky mimics the ice patterns on the lake.I'd crop down and reduce the area of sky to give greater dominance to the ice patterns which are most attractive.

Very nice complimenting patterns James. Maybe just a little higher crop from the bottom to loose those branches. Just a nit pic as it's a beautiful image. Almost has an IR look.

I like the complex shapes and shades captured in this photo. Nature provides us with a never ending resource of interesting patterns and textures and you have done a great job spotting and recording this scene on film. Some might say the image is too busy, but that is part of the attraction to me.

Thanks for your comment on my aqueduct picture.

Cesare,

You are right about the alignment, I did not check it while edited the shot. Good eye! When I get time I'll post the shot in the original color. Thanks for your comment.

Hugo:

Thanks for your comments and critique. Your right about the Patterns in Nature project now that I think about it. I wondered about the foreground but then opted to include it without thinking more about it. But on reconsideration, I'll try cropping the foreground out and see how it looks. The foreground gave me quite a bit of trouble because of the exposure - a bit under in the original. I dodged it some to add a little more detail and contrast.

Hi James,

A good shot, I like the way the patterns in the ice coincide with the darker area of the clouds, leading the eye to the horizon on the left of the image. that works nicely.

As for the Patterns in Nature Project, I think this photo shows a bit too much, the combination of foreground - frozen lake - background hills - and sky, to put it roughly, might be one too much. I think if you had zommed in a bit, cutting the foreground off would've placed ore emphasis on the lake and it's frosty patterns. Nice shot, though.

Cheers,

Hugo

Ciao James, bellissmo panorama. L'unico appunto che potrei fare è sull'orientamento dell'orizzonte che non è allineato con l'inquadratura. Mi immagino, poi, la foto a colori... come erano???

Ciao

Hi James,

This is very well composed and positioned in the frame, but I don't think that monochrome suits this image best. Colour would have made it a bit more vibrant.

Ciprian

Rashed,

Thanks for your comment. This is a water tube oil-fired boiler. It's about 8 years old- much more efficient than the 75 year old one it replaced.
