Nicely done long exposure, Mike. Beautiful scene, too. I take it this must be northern Utah? I'm planning on doing some exploration of Utah soon. I live in the northwest corner of NM.

An absolutely well composed shot. We don't have "clear and rocky" streams in this part of the country. Contrast and color balance is perfect.

Hi, Lori -- Thanks for taking the time to visit. You know what, I didn't think of this as I was working this scene, but I could have used a graduated neutral density filter, angling the line on a slight diagonal over the rocks and into the deep shadows in the upper left corner of the image. This could have done the trick w/the rocks, but would have cast those deep shadows into black, which probably would have been okay. Your observation, though is the very thing that caused me to skip over this image in favor of the bluish-cast setup of this scene I had previously posted. After a more careful screening of the RAW/nef version of this file, I determined the compositional elements warranted an effort to process it. After the fact, I?ve settled upon this image as my favorite of the series; however, I still wish I would have attempted to tame those blazing rocks, in-camera.

This is one of the nicest water movement images I've seen. The various tones and colors are great. The only thing that I find a bit disturbing are the rocks in the top of the photo...too bright, takes away from the calm, peaceful 'feel' of the rest of the scene. (but that's just my opinion)
Maybe, next time a different time of day! (?)
Still, very nice work, great composition.
I especially like (in addition to the moving water) the tones of the water in the foreground.

Ali -- Well said. I agree w/your comments on the submerged foreground stones. I was able to achive that affect on some images of a still lake (not posted on usefilm) and I wanted to try it w/a flowing stream. I look forward to seeing more of your images.

Hi Michael .. Great shot .. You finally managed to choose from between my shots but I can't in this case .. you know ..the other shot has this great mood I can't explain .. but what makes me like this shot is the fact that a part of the water is stagnant so you can see the stones under the water and the you have that big rush of water only a little away from it ..
aNy way .. both are great .. very well done ...

Peter -- Thank you for the comment. I spent a while working this area and found the lighting to change dramatically while I was there. On this day, I was alone; therefore, time was mine to spend. Sometimes one's luck will increase proportionate to one's perseverance.

Melisa -- Thank you for your comments. This was not my first choice from this series. In fact, I didn't even like it at first pass. The highlights at the base of the downfall were too hot and the background rocks were close to being blown out. I went back to review my Virgin River images after taking comments to heart from my "Virgin River Rolls" image. With some effort in Nikon Capture (I'll learn PhotoShop one day), I was able to pull out the color saturation and darken the image enough to tame the downfall highlights and render a reasonable exposure on the background rocks. I now think I like this image better than my initial posted image (thanks, Peta, for the push!). I've read that w/digital, one should "expose to the right." I will typically push the histogram to the point of almost touching the right side which, in this case at least, caused me to skip over the RAW version of this image without a second thought. So, lesson learned? Be more careful with the initial light table review. RAW images do require digital processing to bring out the true image captured.
