I agree. Some of my best nature photos, especially at the beach, have been pure luck...being in the right place at the right time.:)

Thank you Shirley. It's one of my favorites. I wonder how much different it would be starting with a high quality scan. Most wave images are taken here with a nice blue sky late in the afternoon............ I have those too, but so does everyone else on the planet. Like all good images, I find being there at the right moment (luck) is quite often the most important element.

One >calm< day one of those large waves appeared out of know where and landed on me, my girlfriend and her daughter......... we thought we were gonners. Like you said, never turn your back on the ocean. A couple of miles away from here is a coast guard lookout tower on the bluff overlooking the entrance to Coos Bay. They keep an eye out for vessels and people in distress. They have an orange warning flag system for winds and storm conditiions, which may be international. I'm not sure. Here is another warning system for a high wind warning located at this tower. hee hee.

I wish that I could add the sound it makes.... a low powerful thump..... or whump. The location where the people are standing is quite a ways above sea level.... I am guessing over 50 feet or more...... that tree is about 40 or more feet tall from guestimation, and you can see the wave is still on an upward climb going up and out of the frame....... It's pretty impressive on the good days.

Lived in this place for all of my 47 years and couldn't live elsewhere. You could go out there during fantasic storms and see nothing but salt spray..... or it could be good... or fantastic... or lousy... you just never know. The tide height, the wave height and direction and the shape of the rocky bluff at sea level determine the results....... This shot is not of a typical winter day by any means..... It was a good one for sure.

Thanks Sena. The area here is pretty well known and photographed. Mine is a bit different from most perspectives. Usually the day after stormy skies disappear the sky clears, is when you see more common shots in magazine photos with blue sky and the sun shining.... I have those too. Do a Google search on Oregon Waves Shore Acres State Park....... I am sure you will come up with some pleasing photos. Thanks for the comment Sena.

By the way... everyone lived through it..... It's at a viewpoint and pretty safe where the people are standing. These large "splashes" happen farther behind the people than it looks like. I would guess that the people are standing about 50 feet above sea level at this viewpoint. Waves hit and splash to the north of this viewpoint..... haven't lost anyone yet from here as far as I know. Shore Acres State Park is the actual location......... a one of a kind place on the west coast with some history behind it.
........... but I could tell you of a not so funny (after the fact) place to NOT stand during these waves.............. lets just day the wave wasn't able to knock me down, but me and the entire contents.... everything... 100%.... inside my wallet ended up soaking wet. My girlfriend an her daughter "enjoyed" the event with me. Scary afternoon, I tell ya.
I thought, living here all my life that I knew what a calm day was all about........ NEVER turn your back on a wave!
