About Mono Lake is one of the oddest places I've seen. These are tufa towers, formed in a lake with 3 times the salinity of the ocean. It's what I would imagine another planet to be like.

This is a beautiful shot, so calm by the still waters, nice silhouette, warm colours of the start of the day.

Thank you, Margaret-- I'd like to catch a documentary on Mono (I know that there are several). Since they are trying to bring the water level back up, I don't know how much longer the tufas will be accessible.

thanks for looking!

Great shot. I visited Mono Lake years ago, but only in the hot day time. I like the calm and cool feel your photo has captured.

Thanks, Christine, for the conditions update. I'm really looking forward to the trip, and you'll see the results when I get back in June. Thanks for your comment on my work. I also love looking your images. -- Naomi

Thanks for your comment, Naomi.

I just got back from there yesterday, so yes, they are VERY recent ;)!! Snow level is very high right now because of all of the late rains-- no snow at Mono itself, but Bodie (the ghosttown a bit north) is still snowed in. There should be lots of snow left on the mountains for your backgrounds. I'm looking forward to seeing your shots of it-- you have a remarkable eye.

Beautiful series on Mono Lake. Were these recently taken? I'm heading in that direction in a couple of weeks, but didn't know what the snow level would be. -- Naomi

Thank you, Margaret-- yes, the tufa towers are formed by salt, and calcium from the fresh water springs the bubble up through it. My dog started to drink from the edge of the lake, and I was worried until I saw that the water was bubbling up through the sand. I tasted it, and realized that she had found one of the sweet fresh water sources... such a smart girl! The tufas will be disappearing in the next decade or so, since the government is no longer allowing the water that feeds the lake to be diverted to Los Angeles. A wonderful place to see (the lake, not L.A....)

Thanks for looking and commenting!

Really an unearthy place, superb colors and good choice of panoramic format. Gorgeous colors.

I think I saw something about this on TV last week, are these tufa towers formed by the salt - despite the very high salt content there is a lot of bird/wildlife in the area,
Anyway it is a marvellous composition superb colours and silhouettes and yes like another planet
