Hi Dave, thanks for your comment. I think the D70 is a fine camera and does what I want of it. There are always features we photographers lust after but dollar for dollar it is vakue for money. I had an F5 and that was built like a tank. It's the Nikkor lenses that are the true strength behind the Nikon brand.

I used my old 70 -210 f4-F5.6 on the D70 a few months ago and took a hand held shot of a Shag drying it's wings. At 100% crop the detail and crispness of the shot is great. The picture just won an honours in out local Photographic Society Winter Exhibition.

Regards John

Roger I have added another sample with a round of high-pass sharpening for comparison. Regards John

Hi Roger, thanks for your comment. This picture has a blurred layer blended to reduce the sharpness. I have attached a 100% crop of the full image straight out of the camera. No sharpening in the camera or Photoshop. The exposure was 1/400 @ F8 handheld. I was also using the len with the TC-14E II converter, giving an effective focal length of 420 mm. I am very happy with the quality of the lens. It is sharp from F2.8 with very smooth out-of-focus rendition. Easier to hand hold than my old F2.8 80-200 Nikkor. The VR does help although it won't compensate for poor technique. Regards John

For a zoom lens, the out-of-focus area looks pretty smooth. With some lenses it gets "edgy" and looks rather unnatural. The sharpness of the subject looks slightly less than optimum, though. What is your own reaction to the lens?
