Excellent.. both versions are great.. the color brings out a different look and mood. The vignetting is very evident but it does not take away from the image.. great capture

Even from the thumbnail the emotion in this shot RADIATES! I love the high, wide angle that you've chosen as it highlights the expression on her face so well, and makes her eyes so large! How could anyone resist this face?
Thanks so much for commenting on my potted puppy series... much appreciated!

Wonderful image, but I enjoy more the thoughts you bring out in your "about" . I think wwe are not too old to enjoy the simple things I think we have to much, and as a result nothing is fun or exciting anymore. I grew up kind of poor, but was always clothed and fed. I remember the excitment of a bottle of coke that was just for me.
Keep up the good work my friend and remember to enjoy everyday and each thing in it

Salam,

So unique the way you answer and such an enthousiasm you transmit. Your family and friends should be proud.
It is strange because yesterday I wanted to touch your photo called "emotional contrast" to make the wall a little darker as I thought it should be with more details (average zone measurement from your camera). And I thought it will take me some time to do it with care. So I was very nicely surprised about your interpretation of "Chilhood in Algiers". You're more reactive than me and I like that.
NB : the main reason I use low resolution or size is to avoid unauthorized use of my work as I had some bad surprise. That's also a point why I like usefilm as a real respectful photographer community.
If you need a better resolution for expo you can give any E mail addresse at boukerma@yahoo.fr
It will be a pleasure to help you.

Take care

Abu Bakr

Dear Arwa,

Such a strong feeling you showed here...
Since the beginning I always thought you were driven by empathy and this will never stop.
Children don't lie when they face the camera.
Regarding your project, it is really something you can handle. Don't ask, DO IT.
I have only one comment to push you to the top : such a project is always long to establish and you will face lazy days as well as closed doors. My advice if you really want to help these children is to ask their parent to let them follow you during one day, each of them equipped with throwable snapshot camera (400 ISO) and to mix both your digital images and their own point of view. You will make them proud of what they did and it will be really interesting for some magazine. It can even be a global project as I visited so many countries where you guessed Children are one of main concern. Definitively I authorize you to use any of my children pictures for expo use and to make children from all countries to talk to each other.

Take Care and keep walking, running and dreaming.

Dear hugo!
What your saying is right1 if people are going to by those images they wont hang them on their walls its about contributing to the cause!
The idea of an exhibition sounds effective but im not too sure about the local magazines at the same time the qualities doesn?t exactly fit the ?national geographic? criteria
Do you know any magazines that would like to buy the images with a ready made article and at the same time don?t mind the same photographs showing in an exhibition?

About the lens, I was attempting to shoot the buildings in the area and the narrow streets, an I didn?t change the lens before shooting this image , the moment would have passed, plus I was too lazy to change it and too excited and eager to try the new lens ;)

Thank you for the perspective ideas!!! Your absolutely right about the lens! A customary 50mm lens would have worked better, I did shoot some images with the 18-70 mm zoom lens
Tilting the camera to create a diagonal is an excellent idea, I haven?t yet established the ability to find patterns and diagonals around me!!! Its so hard maybe I should practice more and go out of the house with the intention of only finding diagonals or patterns!

I cant describe how thankful I am that you actually took the time and helped out here! Knowing how busy you must be! :)

I would never think that this fish eye lens would make such a great portrait. This is a very original shot. Reflects the playfullnes of the little cutie..I really liked it..Very well done Arwa.

Saeed Al Shamsi Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47735} 4/14/2005
Great theme, no doubt about the capture and the story behind it this type of shots a famous style, of showing face character and expression, I would ease the angle a bit low and show a good appearance of the jaw and the feet even with minimum dof and eliminate the un necessary disturbing object either by more blur or clone. Though nothing to reduce the quality of this great image. Saeed

Oh, and one more thing, have you concidered filling the diagonal of the frame by tilting your camera a bit? I think that would add an additional dynamism to it....:)

Cheers,

hugo

Hi Arwa, A very intereisting project, and a very altruistic one, too. Very commendable!

As to your question, that's more difficult to assess. I guess it all comes down to who you offer these shots. As the nature of the subject is one of the more controverial sides of society, one that not many people are easily confronted with, I think sales to the average consumer would be quite difficult. The altruistic nature of the project would help, but in generating some "real" money for these kids, I think selling the entire series to a newspaper or through an exhibition could have more impact.

As to the photographic technicalities, I always feel hesitant using a wide angle lens in portrait photography, other than for fun. The Point of view is very good, though, but I would chose a less extreme lens (say 50mm or more) and just try to find or aquire a higher position to create the same (but less distorted) effect. Also, combining a variation of angles / POV's might work. Another thing is the presentation, in which a sobre frame, perhaps even made by these kids, would help enormously.

Hope this is the kind of advice you were looking for, but please don't take my word for granted, as I'm only venting my personal (rather far removed from the actual issue) ideas.

Cheers,

hugo

Thank you Dirck :)
Cloning the out is a wonderful idea!!!!!
Thank you for your insightful critique and for writing me such a helpful comment :)

  0

Dirck DuFlon   {K:35779} 4/13/2005
Wonderful portrait, Arwa - I think the extreme wide-angle just serves to emphasize the smile in those big eyes of hers! The overall effect reminds me of one of those caricature drawings you can have done of yourself.
An adult portrait with this lens might not be too flattering, but with children it just illustrates their playful nature!
You could probably use the 'clone' tool to good effect for eliminating the vignettes in the corners and square them off.
Beautifully done!

Hi hugo
My friend thought of this project which is about shooting different poor areas in Jeddah city one at a time focusing on children
and then have a gallery and an auction for each group of images
the money goes to those children to fulfill their basic needs, food homes cloths water and so on
do u think people would actually buy images like these? I loved going there and taking the pictures but im so scared that no one would bet on any of my images?and my friends pics will be sold out ? shes so talented and took some photography courses not like me-
so please if u have any advice to give I would really appreciate it
thanx for the comment

Hi Arwa, an unusual angle, and eventhough the wide angle is not very flattering in most cases (especially shooting heads / portraits with such a POV) it is a joyful photo. Good DOF. The vignetting works well, it has the look and feel as if looking through a peephole some people have in their front door to look who's ringing.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi chris! :)
Its getting easier to use too! Before everything seemed to want to get into the image!
I never had a wide angle lens before even the 18-70 mm lens hardly ever used it at a wide angel
Thanx for the comment
