Neat shot, to me the clouds kind of mirror the rocks.

I liked your response to the forum question/debate over digital/film, which was more or less "go take pictures".

You do it very well.

Beautiful John! I am so excited, I am taking my first trip to the South Island this weekend for a few weeks. Hope to get landscapes as wonderful as yours!

Again such breathtakening photo! John... I think that one of the "secrets" behind great photography is LIGHT! And I don't think, I KNOW that you know that! I just can't understand how you can always FIND the magic and perfect light! I am jealous! ;-)

Gorgeous! the yellow light and the blue sky are such a nice constrast, and I love how you've framed the water with a curve in the middle section of the photograph.

John:

Thanks big time for the update. Right now I am living off of old F-series manual lenses, and I can't focus them sharp enough for the CCD in the D70.

So I am eyeballing the Nikon 12-24 and perhaps a telephoto somewhere in the range of 70 or 80 up to 400 or 500 mm to cover the distant stuff. Trying to just carry 3 lenses to cover the ultra wide to the telephoto.

Thanks for the comment Michael. Well spotted on the moon. It's a couple of days off full.

So far the Nikkor 12 - 24 is performing well. I opted for the Nikkor over the Sigma on size and weight and possible resale value. I have nothing against Sigma lenses, I have their 300 mm F2.8 EX HSM. A fine lens. I know the Sigma covers full frame, but having just sold my F5 & F100 I doubt I will use a full frame DSLR unless they come down considerably in price, say $4000 NZ.

I can use 77 mm filters on the front of the Nikkor. The quality is very good and the slight distortion at the wider end is easily corrected with the PTlens Photoshop free plug-in. I have read on various reviews the CA issues but this can be corrected with software (Photoshop CS raw converter.) It's nice to have a wide angle on the D70. Bjorn Rorslett's review can be found at www.naturfotograf.com.

Same as other comments - nice moon too.

Polarizer?
How do you like the 12-24 mm lens? I know I need to go a bit wider as well after seeing some other people using it for landscapes, and was wondering if the Nikon lens quality is really spectacular.

John, this landscape is superlative! The lighting is far-out and so is the crispness and the framing.
Truly excellent!!!

beautiful shot, John. I love the soft curve into the piece created by the foreground rocks & how the warm sunlight on them matches the background hills - that ties the distinct elements of the photo together wonderfully & creates a strong feeling of depth & perspective in the piece. Hey, i see clouds there!!! congratulations! enjoy them while you can. :O)
