Rose: I would imagine the thorns are the basis for the name although I didn't test the adhesive properties of the plant. Every species of flora on this particular island seemed to have thorns. I suppose it's the same in most desert environments.

Nice softness to the image & appealing pallette. I suppose those wicked thorns are why they're called "sticky poppies."
