Audrey - do you have PS 7? I was pulling my hair out for awhile because I couldn't find the tones you had listed, but then I realized that PS 6 must not have the same Pantone range as PS 7. But that's okay as I found a combination that came close to what you had done. This is definitely something to experiment with. Thanks for all the details. :)

Becky, I tried it on grey scale - Tritone (black, grey(pantone877c) brown(pantone 8640). Used the burn-tool(exposure 3) which helped rid noise and sharpened the image especially round the edges. Didn't use desaturate tool.
Hope all that makes sense. :)

Of course not, Audrey - I don't mind at all. I love your toned image! It looks so . . . creamy! What do you mean by burned in the edges? If anything, this version looks a bit brighter. I especially like the look of the right side of the stump. Did you desaturate the toning about 80-90%?

Once again, I hit submit too quickly. I realize I should have desaturated that toned submission about 50%. I think I've exhausted the reasonable upload limit for one photo though, so you'll have to use your imaginations. :)

Thanks Audrey. I liked your suggestion and gave it a try, though I thought slightly red looked better than slightly yellow. I also lessened the contrast a touch. What do you think? Is it what you had in mind? I've yet to master toning . . .

Becky, this reminds me of a slice of Swiss cheese! Nice abstrast compositional idea (marco too).
My 2 cents of nic-pick would be its too b&w (if that makes any sense?), while it works best in B&W, the tones might be nicer toned 'softer'. Maybe duo toned with a touch of yellow?
Do I know what I'm talking about..... not really!

Dirck, I can't remember what makes the holes. This was taken at my uncle's ocean-front home. Every time I visit, I ask him what makes the holes and every time he tells me and every time I forget. *sigh* You usually find them in driftwood (like this piece), but I honestly can't remember if they're man-made or created by a wood-boring animal/insect.
My mind ain't what it used to be . . .

Thanks everyone for the comments! I'm somewhat partial to the vignetting too, though I agree with Stefan that there may be a bit too much contrast.
As for the colour shot . . . I aim to please. Which do you think is better?

I'm impressed with your creativity here! You've taken a very plain object and made it interesting. Personally, I think color may have made it more appealing to me, but that's perhaps preference only...

I like this as a study in lighting, but for the capture it might be worth considering more gray tones between black and the highlights? It appears a little dark to me and the vignetting kind of pulls even further in that direction.

This is a really interesting shot, Becky, and a perfect title! Do you know what made the holes? They're so perfectly round and smooth it looks like maybe somebody was cutting wood plugs? I like the range of tones here, and the way the concentric circles of the tree draw you right into the 'bullseye.' I'm a sucker for vignetting, so I love the darkened corners - also it reinfoces the centering of the 'target.' Really nice photo!

This is a strong absract image and the black and white tones are very powerful... but, being me, I also want to see the colour one. From what I remember the colour had great play on graduated tones of wood, which is what really pulled me in.
I really like the centering of the wood as well... truly looks like a bullseye (with a lot of misses!*grin*) and the darkness of the corners helps to guide my eye into the shot.
