the shadow/areas on the throat looks kind of funny?!

This is excellent work. In this case it is BOTH the skill of the photographer in capturing the photograph, and the skill of the one photographed to emote...
What we experience here is the feeling from/of the subject, caught so skillfully by the photographer. One of the better portraits I have seen here.
