Hi Debra, you have some remarkable shots in this gallery that show a lot of emotion and and great friendship. I like your work. I just tried to respond to your thread about sharpness in scanning, but for most of your shots I think they have come out reasonably well. I think for this shot perhaps your point of focus and aperture selection have not worked together. If you want to maximise your DOF and sharpness, then you need to set your aperture accordingly, to get what you want. There is a 1/3 2/3's rule that is easily applied (most of the time). When setting your focus point, you find that your DOF for your selected aperture is 1/3 in front of the subject, and 2/3's behind it. The DOF changes with aperture, but always stays near the 1/3 front 2/3's behind. The smaller the aperture (say f11 or f32 for example), the greater the DOF, and the larger the aperture (your portrait shots for example, f9.5 to say f1.8 or larger) the smaller the DOF. I am repeating this but it is important to note that the relationship of 1/3 to 2/3's stay fairly constant, but the distance or depth increases and decrease with each change of aperture. Experiment with this for a bit to see what happens with something static, like a bowl of fruit.

Lovely. Something about the light and atmosphere reminds me of a lovely turn of the century photography.

This image works for me the way it is. I like the focus just on the mirror for that what we are looking at. Soft focus on the person works fine for me. Excellent image and composition.

I love this. I just wish that either she or her reflection were more sharply focused. Right now the focus is on the mirror frame.

Actually, it would be interesting to see two variations on the focus her and then her reflection.

Mary
