The state of California been experiencing a drought for the past 4 years. This has left the forests and grass lands very dry. The states of Washington, Oregon, and California have all been fighting forest fires all summer. The smoke cloud in this photo was taken about 14 hours after a lightning strike started a fire in the mountains between Eureka and Redding, CA. For the next 4 days most of the County of Humboldt was covered by a cloud of smoke that blocked out most of the sun. We had ash fallout for almost 2 days and breathing for a lot of people was difficult. Last Friday, we were lucky to get almost 1/2 inch of rain. The fires are still burning but with much less intensity.
