During the Middle ages and especially after the 11th century, many people opted for a monastic lifestyle away from towns and villages, in seclusion. This movement was encouraged by the Byzantine state which provided the monastic communities with resources - usually agricultural land - to sustain the new communities.
In those days the seas were dangerous as pirates were roaming. Monasteries, such as this one in Mount Athos, Norhern Greece, had to be built securely to protect the monks from invasions. A new architectural style evolved, peculiar to coastal Monasteries. This style is, in my view, perfectly harmonious with its environment.

Very impressive buildings and place Vassili. When the sky is very bright because of the damp and the sunangle, try to take photos without the sky or manualy try to use little bit faster shutter speed from the auto mode. The photo is very interesting! Best regards!
