About Thanks to the Ford Motor Company or the Clint Eastwood movie, whichever you prefer.
A derelict Ford Gran Torino rests in a wooded area north east of Toronto.

Two different exposures were used to get the image, due to the angle and shadow. The car was 1/125 @ F3.5 and the sky was 1/500 @ F3.5
18mm

A good saying, Andre! I must tell that my girlfriend! She will surely feel confirmed! ;-)

Your girlfriend is right Nick. I think another old saying is usually the most expensive haircuts are the ones that you have when no one notices.

I guess that this kind of reasonable and down to earth "exercises" are the best in PS, Andre. I must say that the work on my image "Balance" was one of the most enjoyable things I ever did with PS, and that was the wish to better the image but under the condition of keeping its own look and feel. So, your work here seems to be the right thing: how to make a compliment but without changing the character of the subject itself. To put it in other words, my girlfriend always says that the best makiage ist that which nobody can notice. ;-)

Looking forward for some more versions and some more similar shots!

Thanks again Nick,
There might be easier ways to do what I was trying to do. I'm not really sure. It was good practice for me in Photoshop anyway.
As far as the muted colour goes, the car was rather faded of course. But there was still a lot of glare that needed to be toned down. I like the results like this. But I have kept some other versions.

Thank you very very much for the explanation, Andre!!! I would never think of pasting the sky only as was cut from another image. Good idea indeed! I would rather use layers of PS, each layer with a transition of translucency, and the two translucencies in opposite directions, but your method is the better one here, since it completely avoids unwished interactions on image areas where we don't want them at all. Actually a good way for manual HDR, isn't it?

As about the colors, I imagined that your aim was to let the car blend well with the surroundings since you always will be very careful about the overall look of the scene, but I thought that you had chosen that car exactly because its colors were mute by themselves. But it was a good decision to slightly mute its colors. It doesn't look artificial at all this way.

Cheers!

Hi Nick,
I'm glad you mentioned the muted tones, because that was intentional in this case. The car seemed to blend in better with the natural surroundings when it was a little muted.

Thanks for the comments on this one Nick.
I mentioned it a little in the about. I don't have HDR software to combine the images. So what I did was take several shots using a tripod. I kept the f stop the same on all the shots and changed the shutter speed only. This gave me a choice of exposures. Some where the car was good and the sky was washed out. Others where the sky was good and the car was much too dark. Then, I saved a file of the one with the good exposure of the car and very light sky. Then next step was to "lasso" the sky from the 1/500 exposure shot and overlap it with the image with the overexposed sky.

Oops, klicked on the "Add Comment" button too early! The two exposures worked well, as I can see, but how did you combine them to a single image, Andre? Layers or image halves?

Cheers!

It is as real as any Eastwood movie, Andre! The sense of steel and chromium blend so well with the surroundings, even if the surroundings are not really expected to be the surroundings of an old car. The degree of fidelity on the details and especially on the distorted reflections of the bumper is astonishing! The distorted reflections define the very plasticity of the physical shape, now far less than perfect after all that time. And the strong consistency of the color palette in rather mute tones adds also a certain kind of "silence", if you like, that fits the subject very well.

Only glad to see that you still shoot images of such old cars resting in unexpected places. Though I really wonder how this can take place at all, to have some people just dropping theit cars in the middle of woods, I still wish I would find something like that around here.

Thanks Marcus,
I find that when an old car or truck is left to die near the city, there usually isn't much left in a short while. Unlike in the country or on an old farm, the trucks and cars tend to stay with windows intact and logo badges in place. Maybe it's the threat of a farmer's shotgun that keeps the vandals away. ;)
Thanks for the comment about it being art. Maybe that's a little too flattering, but I'll take the compliment.
There are no wheels in the reflection. I couldn't drive anywhere near this one. There used to be an old Hydro maintenance road in the area, but it isn't in use anymore.
Thanks again.

Thanks Ray,
This one is a little closer to home than most of the other old cars and trucks that I've shot in the past. Most of them were from about 200 miles north of Toronto.
That mustard colour seems to be the in thing with me lately. :) Those trains were almost the same colour. The colour seems to blend with nature fairly well compared to some garish colours, not found in the wilds.

Thanks for the visit and the comment Gord!
I'm glad you like it. There are a few of us at this site that like to shoot derelict cars and trucks. They have always been a favourite subject of mine. I even have some that I shot when I was twenty one and then again 35 years later :)
Check out my "cars and drivers" portfolio if you like to see those results.

I remember your exploits with battered cars from a while back Andre. You seem to have a local 'graveyard' in the area . Even in this different subject you have some more mustard yellow for me. I love the diagonalised composure to your shot my friend and the extra effort in utilising two shots to remedy the tones. Well done you. My very best wishes to you as always.......Ray

Thanks Dave,
In the earlier version, I desaturated it to try and cover up the poor exposure. On top of that, I added selective blurring. It was okay I suppose, but I thought I would try something a little more natural by combining a couple of exposures.
The back of the car in this one was almost completely in shadow, so the sky became bright white. I got around it by taking another image with the care all black and the sky exposed fairly normal. Then I put the two images together for this image.
Thanks again.

Thanks Marcio,
I posted a similar one earlier that I wasn't happy with, so I went back this afternoon to re-shoot with some different exposures. I'm still not 100% happy with my post work, but sometimes when we spend a long time on an image, we see it too close.
I'm glad you like it the way it is.
