I don't know what he is, who he is, and I left him as is. Photo taken with off camera flash set at 2 stops under, held in left hand, camera in right hand, trying to get this right. Any comments helpful. Thank you.
To explain away all confusion on macro I highly recommend "closeups in nature" by john shaw (or any of his other books, all excellent - and very likely the one i see in the usefilm bookstore on this very page - Complete guide....photography by Paul...Davies, it's always worthwhile reading up on the subject.
Thanks Terrence and Bill for your information on this image. Maybe I'm thinking about it wrong. But I thought I would use as much ambient light as possible, that's why I used the compensation on the flash. I have stopped down further up to F32 but the images come back with a grey tint and very washed out. Maybe 19 would work better okay. I'll try that next time. Thanks again!
I can see you don't drink much coffee. How the devil did you hold the flash, focus, compose & shoot? My suggestions for this image would be a crop to eliminate the distracting hot spot on the lower left and maybe elininate the distracting brach in the rear. I think the bug may be a leaf hopper of what type I have no idea as there are probably dozens of different species.
A marked* improvement over the wasp, definitely prefer this to the other composition posted because of its simplicity. What a weird bug, wonder what it is~ Now for the questions of no importance: as long as you're using flash and it's got the power to handle it, why not stop down further? You could bring those legs toward us a little more in focus thattaway, and -2 compensation is required? The ttl sensor on the flash doesn't handle that on its own, odd, never had to bother with much of that when i was using ttl flash myself, good work.
