I am glad if the info help you, Avi. Of course there is no need for a hurry for such decisions, at least as long as we don't find money on the street. But just for the record, the second hand market holds many great surprises too. So, when you make up your mind take a look also at ebay or similar shops.

Cheers!

Thanks for all the info Nick. At some point in time, I would consider buying a wide angle prime lens, and I am very much impressed with all that I heard here about the 24mm. The 20mm is of course a temptation, but I will have to compare performance (distortion, aberration, speed, sharpness etc) AND price to come to a decision. Not now though.. but all this info really helps. I will sure consult you once I am ready to buy !

cheers,
Avi

Thanks a lot for the nice comment, Marcio!

The used film is very good for such situations, as already said.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot and excuse my long delay of an answer, Avi! After some unexpected photo-sessions and the related work I am under the living again.

Well, the 24mm f/2.8 is one of my all time favorites. It is a nice robust and light piece of craftmanship, very faithfully designed around the idea of what it's supposed to do and nothing more. It will give you a sharp focus in the range of about 90cm to infinity and still has the nice old marks that make hyperfocusing so easy, allowing wide angle images that do not suffer from the typical loss of focus on the foreground. It goes from f/2.8 to f/16 which of course will let many people miss even narrower apertures, but as already said this gets more than balanced again by hyperfocusing and in addition it prevents potential refraction errors since its design would introduce them clearly at even narrower appertures. Here is some more info taken from the URL shown on the attachment. (Don't ask me why my message gets blocked by UF when I include the URL un the message. :-/)

The front component of the FD 24mm f/2.8 lens houses two large diameter glasses. These serve to prevent reduction of light volume in the periphery areas of the lens, to eliminate coma and astigmatism, and to completely compensate for distortion. The built-in Floating System makes possible aberration-free shooting at minimum object distance. Its speed of f/2.8 is effective in focusing in low light level photography. It provides high contrast and high resolution pictures even at full aperture opening. Other than the high speed but very expensive FD 24mm f1.4 ASPHERICAL, here is the economical version before Canon introduced the FD 24mm f2.0 version with the new mounting ring. A pleasant surprise is the incorporation of the Floating Elements design which corrects aberrations at close focus distance, and thus making this lens to be very attractive as an alternative wide-angle lens between the 20mm and 28mm focal length.

A really good one that I will keep using every day.

Cheers!

Thanks once again, Dave!

The used Kodak Pro BW 400 CN film dows a good job in such situations of high contrast.
