Thanks, Shirley! I wish I could stop down and get rid of some background - as you suggest, it is obtrusive. I have has some conversation with my wife about a fast birding lens, maybe 500 or 600mm f/4. But, I'm not convinced that I want to lug such heavy equipment around. I think that kind of photography is for especially dedicated, patient and affluent people - not for an impoverished dilettante like me! Eb
