These particular type of painting is known as " Pata Chitra" or Scroll painting and mainly depict stories pertaining to Indian mythology. Mainly cotton or tussar silk is used and coated with a mixture of chalk, tamarind seed and gum to give the surface of the cloth a leathery texture.The Sanskrit word ‘Patta’ means cloth. These painted cloth scrolls, depicted mythology and stories relating to various gods and goddesses and the painter describes the story through songs. It is a hereditary art practiced by the family of the painters. Though these paintings are known for bright vibrant colors, the life of these artists are colourless, the same old story of 'struggle for existence" at every moment.
