What do I think? Well, at the risk of being facetious, I think the ball is already well feathered and tossed. (OK, that WAS facetious. I promise to think about it a bit more seriously later!)

I couldn't agree more about the composition here John. I see a lot of people think otherwise and I'm totally cool with the suggestions (as you know) but it would seriously throw off the balance . . . I guess it's a matter of visualizing the composition without it and it just doesn't work (well, IMO). NOW . . . what do you think of selecting, feathering and tossing a ver light gaussian blur on that ball of feathers?? Very light. Curious to know your opinion on that one!

Stunning colours. I'm with the "ball of feathers" here. Without it, I think the image would have too many disjointed elements and would thus require a total recompose.

LoL! So True Jan! I just like to pet the cat backwards once in a while . . . know what I mean?
I'm reminded of Bill Cosby:
I'm not the boss in my house . . . I don't know when I lost it. I don't know that I ever had it. But I can tell you this . . . I've seen the boss's job . . . and I don't WANT it!!

Doyle -- I like the ball-- reminds me of the back of David Bowie's head when his hair was styled that way. Love the colors and the grace of this picture. (How would they look on the front lawn?)
As for male head of household....! Just a phrase we throw around -- just a figment of our imagination. Just an exercise in futility. And we would not want it any other way....:) --Best regards, Mr. Wimpy

Yet another vote against the ball of feathers, eh? I still say that visualizing it without that ball throws the balance off. Perhaps blurring it? As to the zoo and her birthday . . . we only JUST discovered she had never been. I grabbed her gifts (still wrapped) and made her choose between them and a trip to the zoo. Apparently, that's when Grandma 'drew the line' and informed ME that she would be getting ALL her gifts AND a trip too! This mutiny against the Biblically mandated authority that rests in the male head of the house seems to be a common theme in my life . . . shocker, eh? :P

Half-beaky...I hate it when that happens, it hurts!
Love the dof Doyle...clarity is suffering a bit (a teeeny bit), and I might have tried to clone out the ball of feathers just below and right of the main, full-beaked subject...just a thought, might not have worked though. Color absolutely pops against the black background! You should take Cyd to the zoo more often...don't need no steeenkin' birthday to visit the zoo!
Later...Robin

Thanks Marcus . . . with your skills, composition need only be a secondary consideration. Avoiding blowing out the head and neck left little choice as to exposure here. Timing though . . . was crucial. Appreciate the complement about taking 'tips' from me but it's dubious that you need any. :)

Hmmm.. so RAW means going by the rate at which I click, I would probably end up needing a server !! LOL..
And yes, of crse, by medium format, I meant medium size in JPEG. I have tried shooting in small size few times - the quality seems to suffer even more. So I basically have to decide whether I should continue shooting in medium size, shift to Large, or make an investment :)
Thanks Doyle !!!
Cheers !

Wow I guess I dont have to tell you what a beauty this shot is! the dark background really does have them jumping off the screen, Beautiful work. Composition in nature is not one of my strong points, but I will take a tip from this...

Avi: You know you can ask me anything . . . if I don't know the answer, I'll come up with a really interesting guess for you! LoL!
Yes, I shoot only in RAW and have done so for a long time now. When you say 'Medium Format' I guess what you're referring to is Medium size, Jpg? Medium format photography is a whole different world, using film ... larger than 35mm. Medium Jpg. (as opposed to large, or fine) simply saves space by recording less data. Really, it depends on if you wish to print and which size and a variety of things almost all exclusively related to the intended use of the photos.
Pros and Cons of RAW?
The only CON is the enormous size of the images and that size varies with the details in the capture. I have external Hard Drives to store images. So, if you're going to consider this as an option, you'll need some way to take them off the computer and store them.
PROS include the allowance of decisions on adjustments to the base image that are normally made by camera automatically. For example, if you have the camera set on Auto (or any) white balance, it will be applied to the image prior to Jpg. compression and cannot be undone. The exposure setting has a similar benefit (which I touched on) as you can move it up or down two full stops to get that perfect exposure. Granted, it's generally not needed, but should you have a case like the one you referred to here, you can increase the exposure to get the darkened details and layer, eliminating the areas that aren't serving your purpose.
Basically RAW is a binary code that consists of all data recorded by the sensor . . . and Jpg is a compression of that same data . . . and to compress it decisions are made and executed, eliminating some of the original information forever.
Any more questions, Avi, by all means send me an e-mail, OK?

Yes, you touched a very interesting point - one which I wanted to discuss BADLY with someone. tell me Doyle, are you shooting all your images in RAW format ? Because I am shooting in medium format. What are the pros and cons of shooting in RAW ?
Similarly, what are the pros and cons of shooting in small format ?

Thanks Avi . . . I see what you're saying but the alternative is to increase the exposure and I'm already dangerously close to overexposing the head of the subject. Laying two identical versions (converted with different RAW exposure settings) of the shot might have worked though . . . :)

The BG and the soft pinkish-red tones work pretty well. My only nitcpicking wud be that the black part of the beaks of the ones in the BG is lost in the predominant black BG, giving it a half-beaky look :)
