This is a wonderful candid, JP! I agree with Clive that it needs to be lightened/contrasted some, but I think his sample was a little too bright. I look forward to helping you bring out the best in your photos!

Thank you very much, Clive. Out frustration with PS (I have v. CS3), I have only been using LR lately. But your suggestions help a great deal. Luckily, my sister, who is a graphic artist, is also coming to visit so she'll be teaching me how to use more of PS very soon!!!

Hi JP, Well now, this could be turned into a brighter image and I quite like it.
Much depends on whether or not you have an editor, I use photoshop CS2 and here is how I would have presented the image.
I used quick mask to blank out the sky area using a medium sized brush, then selected back to normal mode , selected the magic wand to outline the girl and dog, inverse the selection then adjusted the tones with levels and then curves.
Hope you like the result.
