About ‘When we went walking tentacle in hand
You could sense that the earthlings did not understand
They’d go nudge, nudge when we got on the bus
Saying “It’s extra-terrestrial, it’s not like us
And it’s bad enough with another race
But f**k me, a monster from outer space...” ’

John Cooper Clarke, (I married a) monster from outer space

Walking down by one of the freshwater inlets leading to the beach last autumn, I came across lots of these land crabs, but didn’t have a camera with me. I went back in the spring to take some shots but they’d all moved on. However last week they were back.

As you walk up they scurry into their holes in the mud. A few minutes later, they slowly re-emerge and continue doing whatever it is crabs do (assuming you don’t move...)

Taken at a distance of about a metre at 300mm in macro mode, these shots made me realise why the Nikon cable release would be preferable to the infra-red release I was using. The IR release needs line of sight in front of the camera (remember, these critters are only a metre away and don’t like any sort of movement), and also the D70s annoyingly only stays in IR release mode for a maximum of 15 minutes if no shot is taken, after which it has to be reset.

excellent photo AJ. I've seen plenty of crabs and other sea creatures up close but never bothered trying to take photos of them. they usually run away rather quickly. I always had problems with the remote release with my D70... usually just ended up using the timer instead.

warmest regards ~ James

Thanks Chad. The IR release is a lovely little device, basically a button on a box about 6cm x 2cm. But it requires line of sight to the front of the camera, whereas with a shot like this you really need to be behind the camera. Also, using the IR on fast subjects like drop shots I've found there is a slight delay, which makes it more or less unusable. But for macro shots where everything is bolted down it is great for eliminating the last hint of camera shake.

Nice detail on this shot and it is obvious you were patient in getting the shot. I enjoyed reading your about section. I have never used IR release, how does it differ from cable release?

How lovely; too bad they are not edible. Excellent angle of view, detail and color. Usually they are a little more orange and a little less yellow but they surely differ in the climes of Spain.

Hi Tony! A Fiddler crab, eh? Well, the description I found on the internet certainly seems to fit. And yes, this shot did require a little patience and it was not too hot... I spent a good couple of hours watching them.

Nice close-up of a Fiddler crab.If you've got bags of time and it's not too hot this kind of shot probably isn't too difficult to get.I've never managed to get one as good as this!I love watching them waving to each other from their burrows, really a quite amusing spectacle.
