If you are looking up in this photo that means they are looking down at you!!! I am glad they weren't too hungry! Nice photo!

Hi Jim.

Well, I did the scanning, and I am a professional, so I guess you can say I did have it professionally scanned. :-) (I use a Nikon Coolscan IV ED.)

No contrast problem here IMO - if boosted it'd be blocky and you'd probably see more particulate. This is 'as seen in real life'.

I'll take a look at your Hammerhead asap.

Melissa, I forgot to ask, did you scan the photo, or did you have them scanned professionally? I have had a hard time scanning underwater photos due to the lack of contrast. have a look at my Hammerhead and let me know if you have any suggestions for scanning..Regards

the particulate doesn't bother me either. it's like atmosphere. it's there and part of the image. I kind of like it. I'm not sure what a "clean shot" is but I do know what I like.

Yeah, Jonathan...what *you* said! LOL!

In other words, that's a great point, and actually correct. There were a ****load of sharks (over 100) and were beside us, behind us, as well as in front of us.

Unfortunately, it was *us* and not *me*...those other pesky divers! :-) So getting a clean shot without divers (and without particulate) was fairly impossible.

Hi Jim - thanks for the comment! I did try that crop (was my first choice) but the 'grain' (particulate) was just so apparent that it really didn't work.

Spotting in PS would just take too long. :-)

(not that I would spot this photo, by any stretch of the imagination. I'm not that anal!)

actually, I like that the shark is chopped off in the lower left. It gives the impression that there were even more sharks, so many that you only captured a sampling of them, that there were too many to put in one frame. sometimes, the implication of what is happening outside the frame is just as important as what is going on inside. Also from strictly a composition point of view, I like things to leave the frame. It creates better lines for your eye to move within the image.

Great shot Melissa!! Was this at walkers Cay(Key)? You may have another nice shot using a bit tighter crop on the central shark and try to eliminate the "headless" shark on the lower left.Nice upward angle. I hope you have more to submit....

You know, I tried to recruit my dive buddy to round up those sharks into the frame, but for some reason, he didn't go for it. :-)

Sorry about that grain comment, you must have posted your comment while I was typing mine. The crop makes sense, just too bad the second shark wasn't in the perfect place. It's still an excellent shot. Regards, Chris

Chris, please take note of my comment above yours for 'grain' 'splainin'. :-)

As for chopping off the shark, had to be done to get rid of those other damned pesky divers! Plus, I usually size my prints to 11x14, so this was the best crop for that dimension.

This is great. I love the perspective. I agree with Vicki that it seems a bit grainy, especially for Velvia. Also, it would have been nice to capture the whole shark in the lower left, but I don't imagine that they were very cooperative.

Where was I? Behind the camera of course! LOL! About 10 feet from the frenzy. Walker's Cay, Bahamas.

Re: Grain - lots of particulate visible from the feeding frenzy. We were only in ~20' of water, so sand was kicking up. It didn't help that I was surrounded by other divers - not all with enough buoyancy control keep their fins off the bottom. So, yeah, they's some 'grain' but it's part of the story.

Do I wish it was clear as a bell? You bet. But if I could afford private dive charters I wouldn't be posting on this site, I'd be diving right now!

Awesome capture!!!!!!!! Great perspective. I love the "cloud of sharks" in the back. Very ominous.

Pretty fearsome sight, you must have had goose pimples all over. Excellent depth to the photo with sharks at varying distances.

An outstanding capture. Would love to know where you were? Only flaw is it comes out a bit grainy on my monitor. But very nice!
