Location City -  Grand Canyon, Hualapai Reservation
State -  ARIZONA
Country - United States   United States
About This is taken at the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. The West rim is not part of the Grand Canyon National Park. It is situated on Hualapai Indian Reservation and considered private property.

Access is only by 50 miles of rough dirt road, sometimes requiring four wheel drive. Or by plane/helicopter. Once at "Grand Canyon West. the Hualapai charge high entry fees, from $30+ to well over $300, depending on what you want to see or do.

In the National Park, rails keep people from falling into the somewhat sloped/stepped canyon. At the west rim, there are no rails. It is a straight drop of 4000 feet.

The closest I could get to the edge was about four feet. I was there yesterday, 12/9/06, when this was shot. I am still shaking and spent last night with "falling" nightmares. It wasn't a good choice for somebody who is afraid of heights.

Thanks, Jacques. Yup, I know there are areas at the south rim without rail and I've even walked down a trail a ways but most of the time, the drop is not a shear cliff, at least where I would or did go.

No shame in that Dave...

You wouldn't be the first to experience acrophobia or aeroacrophobia and won't be the last.

I don't think you're nuts, and I still believe you're brave to have done this in order to capture such a wonderful image.

And yes, dang work getting in the way, but that's life... everybody gotta work... lol...

It's nice to see you back here at UF.

Hugs,
Ani :)

a real nice capture Dave, great details and colors. Just a little word about the rails in national park... I made couple of walk on the rim and there's many place without rail... I've been afraid to make this hicking with my 4 kids and my wife, not for me, but for them. Know what you mean by falling nightmare :)

Thanks, Gary. I really wanted to see this and detoured 150 miles to do so. It was only after arriving at the first point that I asked myself what in the world was I thinking...

Thank you, Ani... but believe me, there is no conquering of that fear. I was fine with everyone standing on the edge simply because I paid them no attention. Then I noticed a guy in his 60s on the edge. I started yelling and cursing at him and then had to walk away... LOL... I bet he thought I was nuts. But just watching him made me want to throw up.

Missed you, too... and UF... dang work always getting in the way.

I'm also scared of heights Dave, but I think I also would risk my sanity for a shot as good as this one.
