definitely have the right idea compositionally - the person adds perspective to the image. Again, its all about the light, and you are shooting in harsh sunlight it appears, where colors wash out and sky has no detail. My suggestions in this situation: to wait for better light, but when that is impossible, I would throw on a warming filter, I almost always shoot with a polarizer in all lighting conditions, and since the sky takes away from the image here, I would compose a little differently to exclude the sky. keep shooting, I think you are on the right track focusing on composing the image first.
