Well spoken and agreed . . . BUT . . . the tops of the masts had two serious floodlights which caused havoc on long exposures and were impossible to adjust exposure too.......the right side was a lot of people and a truck in a wide bevy of activity which I found distracting. Other shots in this series peek at half of the parked truck.

Love the ghostly images... very cool. The lighting is good and the scene is great. For a critique, the foreground is not very interesting and I would have not focused too much there. What would have been nice is to see more of the top of the masts and more of the people. Seems that they are bit cut off on the right. I wonder how this would have looked in portrait (in the center of the boat) or if the camera was focused a little more to the right. Overall, a great submission for the blurry image project..nice work

2)The boat was never intended to be the sharp layer . . . but I get your point from the alternative approach you mentioned in number 1!

Thanks Annemette for the observations. I'm not sure what to do for blurry image but think I'm going to scrap this idea in the end. It was a good idea (I thought) but doesn't seem to meet the bluury project expectations. Rest assured I'll try something else . . . when my mind becomes wrapped around a new idea......

Hmm, I realized I misunderstood what you're trying to do, my recommendation above is for a double exposure, one is blurry and one is sharp and overlaying the two images giving you impression of a sharp image with blurry outline. Sorry 'bout that.

Hi Doyle, here's my $0.02
1.) do you get the feel work is happening?
It is definitely a blurry image, no doubt, but I feel that what you're trying to achieve would have been better presented by taking a photo of the boat itself and leaving out the foreground. However, this is a bit difficult since you are shooting at night and using a slow shutter speed so it's naturally hard to get the sharp image you need. Easy to get the blurry portion, but not the sharp image. You have to contend with the motion of the boat and the motion of men working. So the sharpness part is left out. I see what you're trying to capture. If you have focused on the boat, overlaying the sharp and soft images will show an outline of the boat with some softness around the sharp edges.
2. is this too blurry to convey the feeling of a commercial fishing vessel? Yes. Again, because of the slow shutter speed, you are not able to get the sharp layer that you need.
3. can it be improved (give specific advice only as to THIS shot)?
Try doing this at daylight, but you'll need an ND filter to slow down the shutter speed and get the blurry image. And then you can also easily capture the sharp image just with shooting straigh. You may want to leave a part of the foreground as some form of anchor that's always sharp. But the boat will be sharp with a blurry outline.
What do you think? I've been trying to do this with a flower patch, but I don't have an ND filter that's dark enough to slow down the shutter speed.

First of all I think that it´s a great idea that you and Marcy try out different techniques which much be much fun, as you both like photography.
I do get a feeling that something is being done, a sense of movement of some sort.
I do think that you accomplish showing that it´s a fishingboat.
The lights and people make it look like a party though, but who knows? Maybe work IS a party for them;-)

Thank you Saeed . . . the distinction between "blur" and "ghostly" escapes me . . . if that is what you were trying to communicate. In my mind, ghostly suggests transparence . . . and blur suggests a, shall I say, indistinct edge? Thanks for your comments and attempt to help . . . it's nice and I was clear enough to understand you complemented me about this having a creative result. I appreciate the efforts you have made to help me.

You've created a ghostly effect with this. The hardness of the quay forms a contrast with the blurry effect, though in all honesty I'm not absolutely sure that it works overall. The basic idea is splendid, though!

I hope I can be clear to answer some of your questions,, I think the shot is not part of a blur subject is part of ghostly ,effect by the motion, which is a good contrast with the clear foreground, the way to improve my shots is keep experimenting more captures till am satisfied.
Your capture here is within the subject with creative result.

Thanks so much Ray!!!! I did - Indeed - consider what you said very well. The problem was getting perpetual stillness from the sailor volunteer who remained "On Dock" during the exposure. As it happens, he was helping them cast off but NOT going with them. In your opinion . . . would a slight blur to him (not as bad as the ship) be a horrible thing?? I opted for this shot as it had no blurry, dockside sailor . . . but the sailor WASN'T nearly as blurry . . . most of him was very clear. I have TWO versions, but the one with the boat pulling out has even more blur to the boat. I may post both when I get home from work and would love to know what you think.

Here goes Doyle....yes, you have achieved that there is activity going on; I believe the blur to be good and that there is sufficient detail within the blur and on the quayside to leave no doubt as to the nature of the vessal's occupation. The last part is trickier; I have done something similar in my history and feel a need to re-try having seen your shot. I think I would have asked for one crew member to remain fairly still for that 5 seconds providing they were standing on the quay. That of course makes for another problem, is there time for them to indulge a photographer's art.
Well done to you on this composition my friend I think you have created a most interesting composition for the project. Great colour tones and wonderful clarity in this remarkable night-time study. I am now impatient to find a window of time to do something of a parrallel nature. All the best to you.....Ray

personally i like the end result... think you succeed in composing stillness with blurriness... the boat seems like vibrating with activity while it is apparent that it is a fishing vessel because of the nets seen crearly on the doc... the night colors are captured really good... i don´t know if you can improve it more than that (still experimenting with blur myself so i couldn´t really give you any expert advice)... all in all, a very good image... well done...
