About I am looking for some feedback... After taking this shot, I liked it. After staring at it awhile, I decided it was too simple. I then went bananas in PS and altered it so much that I had to submit it to the Digital category. Now I don't like the PS'd version and am back to this one... I just can't figure out if this is just too simple, too plain, or if that is the whole point or ????? I like this pic every time I see it, but after awhile I question it. Input appreciated, thanks.

PS After uploading, I see that this pic did not compress well. Looks sharp and crisp in .tif, but just doesn't do well in .jpg, especially the sky.

Crop out the road in the forground and I think this is a great photo!! IMO the best photos ARE visually simple.

I like the shot. Beautiful colours, very peaceful. I'd try and crop out the snow in the foreground and possibly also the road. I think they both somewhat distract you from the barn and tree and alter the balance of the picture without been "points of interest" in their own right. Great shot though!

Hi Rachelle, I kinda stumbled onto this one late in the game but anyway......

I like the composition 'as is' the road gives it a point of reference. As stated before: it's not worth beating yourself up about, and besides winter is always coming! Go back, reframe, whatever next time it snows....or....maybe not?

Only thing I might try is to convert to greyscale and play with the contrast etc.

don't worry about 'simple'-simple is good for people like me :)

There is nothing wrong with "simple." Some shots on Usefilm are remarkable for their profound simplicity. This shot by you is very good, I think. Somebody suggested you crop out the road. I agree. That would make the photo even simpler, because one element would be removed. Then I think you need to make the photo "pop" be playing a little but with "levels." The shy, the tree, the barn--three simple elements that are good enough.

OK- Everyone has had their say- here is my 2 bits :-)
1, Composition - lose the road. I think I would have walked across the rod and perhaps even used a slightly wider lens.
2, Lighting - This is always subjective but I think this is a little dark and a bit to warm for a snow scene.
-
I Have been completely shameless in my "adulteration" of your fine original - please forgive. This "sample iis waht I have in mind.
That is NOt to say its not a wonderful picture you have already - BUT you did ask for some ideas.
Regards

rachael.. the only thing i can think of this photo needed digital treatment is the sky.. and some color balancing.. i took your shot and did as follows.. tell me what you think.. what is facinating about this shot is the loneliness of the house.. and the lone tree and the road.. in snow.. just beautiful and serene..

There is a good balance between the barn and the tree. The colors are very good too. The road in the foreground, however, works against the composition. Crop it out and see how you like it.

This looks so realistic. I have driven by many of these scenes and know how bleak they look in real life. This is a great picture and shows landscape for what it is. Well done. Don.

Thank you, all. I do very much appreciate the feedback and comments. This barn photography might not be all bad, after all :)

Quit beatin' yourself up. This is a great image [at least to me & also the Mrs.] This is exactly what it looks like where I live & so I can relate to this. I think the road is ok in the image & I think that simple is beautiful. Don't worry about the grain either. A wise old photographer once said "There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy subject". I like it.

I rated 8, like everybody, and like everybody, and think that the road is not useful :-)

I dont think there's any need to add snow.. I like the snow the way it is, it has character... I do think cropping the road out is the way to go though... Christian's version looks just 'bout right :) The photo is great Rachelle :) And congrats on photographer of the day!!

liked simplicity, but like this more as it has a bit more light & detail and the road sets it off really well definately not to simple its great .

Thank you all for your input (and reassurances :)) That pic was about to drive me crazy. (Admittedly a fairly short drive.)

I agree with the cropping out of the road, I think. I cloned a little more snow in and sort of like that as well, though I've left it pretty rough here. Anyway, thanks very much for the comments!

I like it so much... Here's an idea based on others' suggestions and my own feeling.

Well, I love the photo... my tiny comment(s) are:

- Although I like the composition, but (from a graphical point of view) the red house and the tree have the same weight, where if you have one of the in the forground and the other one is far away (could be the red house for example) it would make it more intersting (IMO)

- I love the colors, but I think you used a telephoto lens, where I feel I need more depth in the photo, that would enhance the power of the image.

Rachelle, This is a great photograph! The composition works well and you have managed to convey the feeling isolation and the bitter cold of winter. Cheers from New Zealand.

Comment requested so here goes..... I too would probably like this shot if I took it, however from an outsiders point of view it lacks 'something'. It's 'simple' but not 'stunning'. The snow over the field is in the state where it's not quite enough so doesn't give the lovely blanket feel that would normally come from a fresh foot or so. Finally I think the road is not required and somewhat distracting. Try cropping that out and maybe reducing the shot to a wide angle landscape scene - I think that would improve it.

Renee Robinson   {K:2112} 3/26/2003
Rachelle - calm down, its beautiful :-) I don't think it is too simple at all and if it is then maybe that is the point. Simple is nice sometimes. Simple and beautiful is what this photo is and if this is the original then it is even nicer. I love the position of the barn and the tree in the frame, the coloring, everything. I think the sky looks very cool too. I love the way the snow travels along the side of the road. I didn't see the digital version, but I have to say -- I really like this version.
